My cage had air today, or perhaps
it's door ajar I flittered free, my mind
unable to dispel the notion of chains.

A slow drive, the hallowed university,
it's library I frequent. What use have
engineering students for humanities?

One book of poesy in hand, last checked
out in 1958. Another ancient, it's smooth
leather cover tied by once red now pink string
almost disintegrates at the pluck of
gentle disrobement.

The wooden swing cupping me a temporary
fruit of the giant tree. Avant garde free press
perused while enjoying a stout Cohiba.
Last of a batch from a Syrian co-worker
in gratitude for my dispatching an overbearing
manager from a place I no longer work.

Unlike the Sunday morning highway, my section
of library catches the afternoon
overflow of students from other floors.

I could forgive the black girl at the next table
her wheezing and even pray for her recovery.
But not the alternating slam of the pen and
highlighter. Nor the ruckus of the turned page
which rivaled the thunder producing aluminum
sheet manned by an enthusiastic stagehand and
reduced to a faint echo the original felling
of it's father tree.

The return drive, it's civilized attempt towards
peace. A reworking of the Cuban cigar with windows
rolled down turned angst ridden.

A close call with a aggresive public bus,
tailgating by a redneck, police sirens
demanding I sway my course.

I saw you in the red mustang. Coal black hair
and pure alabaster skin. Your look the
frozen glaze over bone china.
A frightened doe trying to freeze fear in
zen like denial of reaction to his baiting.

He a course, crewcut thick neck. I inched
up because you are beautiful.
His wrath not confined to the car's glass I did
us all a favor and focused on my cigar.

I know you both were looking at me.
For two different reasons. For that life lived before the
light changed I tried to will your escape.

With no right I'd have taken you away. Instead
we all continued our course on the dual lanes of
Love and Hate.

Richard, again you have proven yourself to be a masterful writer. I felt I could reach out and touch that poetry book, tied in faded ribbon. The slamming of the pen on the table, even the smell of that cigar (which wasn't so pleasant for me) and that aggressive bus. And with great mastery you managed to spin a web, a brief love/hate  triangle. Another well orchestrated symphony of a Sunday afternoon, Wells style.

Amazing, Richard, I fell right into this, at the library, and even more so in the car. Wow.
Extremely strong writing.

*sigh* I have such a love of librarys and old books. I always feel like I am going into another time when I have an old book in my hand. This poem took me there and then had me follow you when you headed home. Such a day filled with mixed emotions. Your work seems to be drawing a portrait of you in my minds eyes. There is much pain always penned into your words. I hope for joy and love in your near furture. Very well done and a total joy to read.

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.

Richard...I especially enjoyed this one.
You painted a very clear picture, and I could almost sense you looking over at me when I reached the red light....slight smile, cigar smoke drifting out the window...oh yes, I was right there.
Got myself right into this one, I did.
Well done!  Nancy.
