Along the Avon

I sat along the Avon and I listened to the stream
Whispering sweet phrases from the heart of poet’s dream
I could not touch the height of splendor, nor the grace of hand
For these were lyrics softly handed down from God to man

It was a holy pen which wrote the acts that graced the stage
With verses still adored today, born in a former age
A dialect with double meanings woven in the plays
Hidden deep within the fragile layers of a phrase

The water echoes out the songs, the sonnets filled with love
Inscribed on parchment pages with a pen from heaven above
For how could man have written such exquisite words of wealth?
That is a weighted question that I always ask myself

If you have found the answer to this mystery, tell me please
For Shakespeare’s words from heaven are still blowing in the breeze

I believe he could have gone on forever, Liz. As a matter of fact, he has....

An excellent tribute to the master....

What a beautiful poem this is Elizabeth. When wandering through the house where he was born, I too was struck by the fact that his words still live on hundreds of years later....though a different time and age, his writings still bring so much, to so many

If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please?

This was a beautifully woven tribute indeed, and brought me a wonderful memory of a 10th grade English teacher who would drive me mad about the double meaning of his words back then.  Thank you for both the poem and a memory.
