Listening to every heart

Spanish Moss

Deep, buried deep down,
dark, dank, unforgiving ground
musty leaves and Spanish moss mourn
where once a love was e’er born
a treasured chest buried deep down,
where thoughts now ne’er roam.

Within cavernous wood and
rusted green ironed lock
lie undisturbed a pink silk,
memory of young girl’s frock,
linen doll, some lonesome keys;
lies in dank veiled heart’s mystery.

Came the razing of this land,
hands uncovering treasured chest,
left alone after loss of lover
shed now of its dark, cold cover
discounted moments unburied now
come again in grip of sunlight’s vow.

For sunlight saw forbidden love
beneath the lace of Spanish moss,
tears had fallen, curses heard,
then treasured chest was tossed
buried deep down, dark, dank, ground
Spanish moss whispers a mourning sound.

Perhaps a hundred or more years ago
a lover lost, in grief despaired so;
then treasured chest carried there
to be buried deep, dark, bereft of air;
her silvery shadows wear the lace
of Spanish moss that covers her face

once, a loveless love was born
now only Spanish moss will mourn.

Oh....this was so spooky, but so good!  Into the library it goes.

Sad and spooky, perfect for Halloween.

God bless America, my home sweet home.
