The Beauty of Aging On a Saturday afternoon outing, A Mother and her six-year old daughter stepped into a salon to shop for cosmetics. The smiling employees ushered them quickly onto barstools, today’s special: makeovers. Sarah (the little girl) got a blue flower painted on her cheek surrounded by glitter; Mom was hoping to turn back time. It was Homecoming night in the little town, and several young ladies were primping and preening in preparations for the upcoming dance. Mom waited patiently, secretly enjoying the scene; one teen had a zit emergency that no amount of tint could conceal. By the time they were finished, the blemish stood out, a discolored bruise on her tender chin. In the chair next to Mom, another young lady’s eyes were being painted in dramatic smoke. The makeup man fussed over her, exclaiming in mock horror that the orange-red lipstick did not make her look “whorish.” He turned to Mom and said “Isn’t she stunning? Mom agreed the eyes were great but the lip color was wrong somehow. Meanwhile, the lady applying Mom’s makeup lectured that less is more at this age, and presented bottles of precious fluid (with a higher per ounce price than gold) guaranteed to erase visible signs of aging. While the teen tried on fire-engine-red lips, Mom’s were painted in light mauve, to “hide any bleeding into tiny lines.” Poor Mom, she really felt old today, sitting between her flower-power daughter and the Homecoming queen. © 2001 Corinne Bailey [This message has been edited by Corinne (edited 10-27-2001).] |

Nice imagery, Corinne. I could really see that mom, the flower girl and the beauty/homecoming queen. Come to think of it, I saw them on a TV show last year. That Mom still looks better to me in the 'before' scene. |

Touching and real, a time if not a place all of us have been male and female. Death comes not when we cease to breathe, but when we cease to dream. |

![]() (big hugggssssss) Aw, this is so sweet, I'm so happy for the sweet Homecoming queen and the sweet little girl! (smiles) I see teh beauty of aging as a special time to watch our loved ones grow and blossom before our very eyes, and share their smiles and tears with them, and feel new love shining between hearts. (sigh) This is so beautiful, sweet Corrine! (kiss on cheek) Muah! I love it! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet friend, thank you for sharing! May love and light always shine upon you! Love, Noah Eaton |

Thank you all for your wonderful comments. As you might have figured out (I know Marge did!), I was the Mom in this story, and Sarah is my daughter. I'm still kicking myself for buying the magic syrum, too! Corinne |
