Last Will and Testament

This is the end, the final word
of all the rambling thoughts you’ve heard
Through all the best and worst of years
Though all we lived these many years

And now it’s time to let you know
What gifts in death I would bestow
It’s to the living I impart
those things most treasured to my heart

It is for you, the young to choose
the things you hope to save or use
The worldly goods your fondest of
that warmed our home and spoke of love

But I would rather choose to give
the things by which you all will live
To you, my children, cherished ones
My lovely daughter, three good sons

I leave a treasure greater than
the wealth of any living man
I leave to you a heritage
that will endure from age to age

I leave the principles I’ve taught
I leave the deepness of a thought
I leave respect for natures ways
The stars of night, the golden days

I leave the simple humble words
The beauty of the summer birds
The smell of wet in April’s earth
The things of true aesthetic worth

To your sweet children, little ones
whose lives have only just begun
I leave the greatest gift behind
I leave my heart, my soul, my mind

For these are written on a page
and can be read at any age
Whatever wisdom I have gained
In lyric verses is contained

Within a phrase of poetry
you’ll find a silhouette of me
I leave to all these verses scrolled
of all I lived, from young to old

You will draw from time to time
The peace and joy within a rhyme
The answers to your fears and doubts
that poured from life’s aesthetic spouts

And so this is the cherished gift
to ease your mind, your soul uplift
I leave the thing most dear to me
I leave to you my poetry

And what greater gift than the words of your heart and soul.  This is the greatest gift they will ever receive and so shall we, and for that Elizabeth Santos, I give thanks.

This one tugs at the heart strings.  It is hard to read through the tears.

Death comes not when we cease to breathe, but when we cease to dream.

Elizabeth - You are an amazing woman.  Having met three of your four children, and having been soooo fortunate to have shared in the "birth" day of your most recent little one, I've got to say that they already have your gift - They are a piece of you - gentle and wonderful spirits all... Love ya sweet Liz...

I hope they truely know and understand what an percious gift that is....
sometimes I wonder that only another poet can apprecitate the depth and longevity of this gift of verse..and coming from a poet of your calibur...the gift is even more amazing...as is this very special poem.
Once again I say...you are a poetess of exceptional grace.

This distance has shown how the road remains alone
Now I'm looking in my life ... for a truth that is my own.

This is beautiful, Elizabeth, so beautiful and touching. The words that speak our hearts, I think, are the best things that we can leave to our children and grandchildren. Wonderfully expressed, Elizabeth!
