Race to the Outhouse
By Larry Chadwick

At gramas house if you had to pee,
It was always a great big chore.
You couldn’t just go down the hall,
And open the bathroom door.

An outhouse was all she offered me,
It always seemed so far away.
I’d hop and I’d dance about,
Hoping the inevitable to delay.

I’d dance and I’d dance some more,
But I never could dance all night.
Sooner or later I just had to go,
But nobody understood my fright.

The guard of the outhouse was my blight,
I had to run, I could never  walk.
He always scared the *#! out of me,
That nasty rooster, the big red cock.

I don't think my broom would have done me much good against the moose.  LOL

Huge Laugh!!!! Oh do I know this. And the freezing cold....the noises of the woods. I had fox, raccoon, skunk, rabbits, (SNAKES) the whole woodland forest to shoo away just to go shoo shoo!!! LOL. I used to dream...when I get rich I'm gonna get Mamaw a real bathroom! Loved this!

Sincerely,
Regina

This is so cute. Can't say that I remember the outhouse at my grandparents place (though I've been told there was one). They must have moved to a place with indoor plumbing by the time I was old enough to form memories. You write your memories very well.

If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please?

I remember out houses. You forgot to mention the wasps, black widow spiders and smell. We had the convenience of having a "two holer"and a Sears and Roebuck catalog. It served a dual purpose.Reading and wipeing.

Regina,
Are we old or were our families poor?  LOL Too many critters to fend off for me.  Glad you enjoyed.

Tracey,
I've heard the line "that was before my time" before.  It seldom works for me these days.

Startime,
We'd never have guessed going potty would bring fond memories.     LOL thanks.

Nan,
Side by side was the way I knew,
Because of the business we do.
The one on top had a great view,
But guess what would happen to you.

LOL

Paladin,
You would be mistaken, I didn't forget:

Hanging my bum on an open hole,
Just so I could take a pee.
Wide cracks in the walls,
Now all my cousins could see.

Should I go on?  LOL

Suthern,
Thanks!  And really good point on Nans picture.

Startime,
Shame on you.  hehehe  Poop, I wish I was in management.

SmartChick,
Very perceptive.  It scared me to death.  I always hoped they'd slaughter him.  But nooo!!!

Cindi,
Careful or you'll be racing to the outhouse!

ROFL ... oh this was wonderful Larry ... it brought back soooooo many memories for me of our little cottage up in Muskoka when I was a child. We battled the raccoons in the dark of night to make our way up the little hill to the outhouse. Many a time, I'd beg my older sister to accompany me ... holding her hand tightly all the way until she stood guard outside the door, LOL. Much enjoyed!

Best wishes,
/Kit

Larry!  Give me back MY broom!  This Enchantress needs it for Halloween!  This is as funny as the car ride I took last night with you and the gang!

Kit!!  I love Muskoka!  Go there as often as possible and there are some weird wild creatures in those woods!

Great write and lots of fun Larry....
~hugs, Nancy~

/Kit,
I was at a disadvantage.  I am the oldest.  But you know exactly what I felt. LOL  Thanks.

Enchantress,
Okay, you can have the broom but don't get very far away.  LOL  Glad you enjoyed.
