The Weaning of Demosthenes Today, again, these few, small words, though chosen carefully for sound as when a boy on a warm, summer afternoon drops into the long, soft grass beside a pond and feels, instinctively, for stones. Were his hands those of a grown man, with fingers callused to the bone, his palms would search then quickly round each time they found the perfect surface. Being young, his mouth conforms and tongues with pleasure, as privately beside the water he contemplates a public ripple, though secretly he sucks the pebble. RMW |
