Margaret’s Compromise Without complaint, Margaret accepts providence; putting her faith in Jesus, she claims it must have been her husband’s time. After fifty years of marriage, though, she’ll never learn to sleep alone; and since she’s blind, she’s got no use for the Caddy or R.V. She lives in a rust encrusted trailer, in a mobile home park in Arizona. The terrain was once a grapefruit grove, every space has a reminiscent tree, but the rest is paved over in black slurry stuff that sticks to your shoes in summer. Can’t live in a tin can in the desert heat, so she sets out on an annual pilgrimage by ground or air, to visit friends and relatives who don’t really want to see her. She returns with the thunderstorms. We know she's lonely. We turn our heads away, pretending not to notice. She talks to him every night, right after prayers, and I’ll bet he’s answering. © 2001 Corinne Bailey [This message has been edited by Corinne (edited 07-26-2001).] |

I'm sure that he is. . . ![]() an excellent portrait. . . tenderly told my friend. . . you do have a way of making the people in your poems part of us. . . --------------------------------------------------------- To the world, you may only be one person. But to one person, you may be the world. |

This is very well written and very sad. Too many of our elders are left alone in the world and we seem to ignore this... Thank god for the Internet, if I get lonely I'll just come online to visit you. ![]() Parker |
