I attend her last mile, pallbearer to her fate. Chosen by both weakness and strength to carry the red rosy vibrant along the path whose every step bears witness to her increasing ashen end. I revived her for a time, will accept credit for either prolonging the cruel inevitable or briefly bringing the blush of what passes for life. A failure and success. She'll have time now for memories, but time will wear her down. Fate foreshadows funereal forces. For most of one year I showed her most of what life could be. I've shielded kicked dogs from calloused blows to the point of my own limping, and cupped with both hands wounded birds to the point of my own starvation. Please God have mercy on her. I know I attend the last mile. |

I know I attend the last mile. ================================= oh this is wrenching... and oh my how I relate to the wounded bird line... I have been told so many times..."no more strays" ... some need more than we can ever give them, and sometimes we need to give more than is healthy for us. this poem touches me in places deep Richard. take care jm only you could give love that satisfies the soul... |

This hurts....your pain comes across, but I am glad for you, that you realize you could do what you did, and did as much as you could... |

Ahhh...and I think Janet Marie nailed it right on the head didn't she Richard? I quote her" ... some need more than we can ever give them, and sometimes we need to give more than is healthy for us..." This was very sad for the last mile, but so necessary. Hugs my friend, and for the little wounded bird too. I shall pray for that bird. ~ Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance ~And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance ~ I hope you dance. (Lee Ann Womack) |
