not really wanting to come
but, the invitations were made
and they accepted, although reluctantly

there are other places that
they would rather be,
alone or together,
away from this babbling crowd
these chords of cacophonous harmony

then, they meet all over again,
he realizes that the only quiet
in the room is in her eyes
green of fire, and full of love and life

she sees that the only stillness
in the room is in his shy smile
pearly dark and shimmering black
passion and desire for only her

the first verse of their love now over
the second one ready to begin
