You err, a grave misjudgement,
the cascading glass and steel
it's acrid air so pungent
you assumed from it we'd reel.

You mistook our compassion
for a weakness of resolve,
From so called "martyrs" crashin'
our unity would dissolve.

You saw us as complacent
with no bonds of brotherhood,
divided country nascent
immorality we stood.

You reckoned selfish and greed,
that money flows through our veins,
we'd turn away from the need
of the thousands you caused pain.

You thought that we'd fear the pall
from sepulchre, shroud turn ash
and precipitate our fall
then encourage us to crash.

You'd silence any fury,
break the spine of resistance,
then panic us with worry
and threaten our existence.

We couldn't believe our eyes
the morn we gazed overhead,
saw in American skies
our character was misread.

We thought in our confusion
we must have been seeing things,
surely it's an illusion
in the land where freedom rings.

We sprang to others rescue
Chaplain, Firemen and Police,
spirits of red, white and blue,
but the terror didn't cease.

Yes for now we cry aloud
our faces bloodless pallor,
in prayer our heads are bowed
It's not a lack of valor.

You see us now on our knees,
we purposely genuflect,
in our rising one foresees
a union all will respect.

You view us as a mongrel
but our mix is an alloy,
our courage, heart and our soul's
a bond that you won't destroy.

The families you sunder
from all races, continents,
shall not be knuckled under
by any evil intent.

Nation not founded for gold
but freedom to worship God
refuse despot's stranglehold
shall not by terror be awed.

We adhere to a charter,
freedom for all it's award,
that Lady in the harbor
draws now from scabbard a sword.

Honed righteous indignation,
sharpened with steely intent,
people from every nation
the Republic represents.

Freedom's truth is it's armor,
Liberty's promise it's shield,
the likes of you can't harm her,
She'll never to terror yield.

From this mission we won't quit,
nations whose two faced deceit,
knows not American grit,
will themselves now know defeat.

Forever float that standard sheet!
Where breathes the foe but falls before us,
With Freedom's soil beneath our feet,
And Freedom's banner streaming o'er us?

Should Freedom fall there will be only Darkness left and in that Darkness small lights will light up and grow into a new flame of Freedom.

Munda said it very well.  I will only add, he didn't think it through...and it only takes one mistake...

well done, Mr. Wells...

Perhaps in forgetting on nation under God, you also forgot that we who were once washed in blood of innocence can only be strengthened by it.  A fitting tribute to something that remains wordless....

Well I looked to the sky for my anthem
The words and the music came through
But words and music can never touch
The beauty that I've seen in you

Thank you, I wish I could have said all that. For some reason, I can't write at all, but this is done well, and I love the resolve. They will not break us, but wow, felt pretty close there for awhile.

I applaud this reflection Richard! I know us Southerners have that grit and we'll share it with all that need it!

Richard you speak for more than the United States in this poem, for many join your Lady in the habour and you in drawing the sword to rid the world of these worthless vermin.  Extremely well done and your cadence is right on!  Well done.  And Amen to all you forsee.

Nothing.... is my answer to your title. We will never be the vast void and wasteland of the nothingness they so want us to be. The heartbeat of America will never be smothered out. Your verse beats loud the dignity that will continue us strong. Thank you so much!

Sincerely,
Regina
