When I was young Adults watched me. I certainly did enough things To warrant their ire and displeasure but they had to be careful. They didn't know what I would become. hehe... Perhaps their wife's gynecologist Perhaps I would marry their daughter. Perhaps I would run the nursing home Where they would spend their final years And they would live out their lives On lumpy mattresses Or whatever tortures of the damned I could concoct Recalling how they had treated me When I was young. So they had to be careful... In my middle years People watched me For indications of importance Which would command respect Or caution... Glint of eye Authority of voice Cut of cloth. Shaker? Or faker? A man to be acknowledged? Admired? Or disregarded? On the way up? On the way down? Or stagnant? Now With old age approaching No one watches. Whatever I was going to be I was. Now that I drive slowly enough To smell the flowers And Ben-Gay Others honk at me To get out of their way. My ride on the ferris wheel Is coming to an end and There are people waiting Waving their tickets Screaming for their turn. That is as it should be. Life is coming and going Up and down Out with the old And in with the new. When my time comes To disembark I shall do so willingly Hand my ticket To a young face Alive with excitement Eyes glowing With anticipation And, smiling, I will say, "Hang on, friend. It is one hell of a ride." |

It sure has been 'one hell of a ride' my friend. I truly enjoyed this one, the ride and the poem....if we hurry we have time for another ride on the carousel. Nancy. ~Time has cast a spell on you |
