Ghostly Remains ~*Marge Tindal*~ ![]() The piano sits in dusty quiet no more roustabout of song Ghostly shadows don't even dance for they've been gone too long ![]() Dancing strings no longer boogie to the rush of gold in mine No serenade of fortunes made memories sit in muted mime ![]() Roulette wheels stand quiet as though waiting for the ball to drop Aces up on the table a winning hand was stopped ![]() Booming in the late 1800's gold in every pan All that glittered apparently didn't as from the fires they ran ![]() Ten thousand in population when disaster struck the shafts Fire in the hole ! - Fire in the hole ! Not much was left ![]() Diehards are a funny breed some determined to try again Damnedest thing you ever will hear brought down the town ![]() Bodie sits in silence as though time just moved on 'Birthday Bodie Bill' set a 1937 fire that spread to almost all they owned ![]() Seems the little brat got Jell-O instead of cake Set fire to the kitchen table no wishes did he get to make ![]() What the fire didn't destroy remains in ghostly attire Gathering the dust of the ages a ghost town shed of aspire Bodie, California situated in the rugged mountains of the High Sierras remains almost as it was left, when the last of the settlers deserted it in 1961. The artifacts have been preserved, giving visitors a rare look at time in the era of the gold rush. ![]() ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] [This message has been edited by Marge Tindal (edited 09-05-2001).] |

The sins of the past? I'm constantly amazed here in Oklahoma at the number of Oil towns that have dried up and literally blown away. All that remains of some of the towns are skeletal foundations and less than paved roads. The fields are still black with oil stain...but the towns are gone. Nice poem, Marge. |

Ghost towns are so wonderfully full of artifacts that have become the cornerstone of this country. In truth, it wasn't really so long ago, was it? This is a great story, dear poetess...:happy |

Marge, From San Diego to Yosemite one can find Bodie. This is an excellent discription of this haunting little town. May your dreams always dance to the rhythm of a lover's heartbeat... |

CatalinaMoon~ This was such an interesting piece for me to research in rhyme. Glad to know you enjoyed it. RSEvans~ Nice to see you back in the forums. Thank you for the read and reply. GGRN~ Thank you so much. The photos 'spoke' to me. I found the entire story of this town just fascinating. Karilea~ The story was one I lucked into ... and was intrigued that the dust sheets hold the history intact. Thanks so much. Nan~ Years of history, draped in dusty memories. Amazing isn't it ? Titia~ It felt like walking through a cemetery with the history written on the dusty headstones. Thank you, hon. AWhispersCaress~ Thank you. The pictures are hauntingly beautiful. My muse enjoyed this piece. Thanks for letting me share it with you. *Hugs* ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ |

You have a knack for taking things most people have never seen and showing it to them with your words. |

Marge: I've been to Bodie several times and your poem and pictures bring back lots of memories. There are more buildings there than the ghost town I lived in, but they all have the same atmosphere. Fascinating places! Great job on this. Betty Lou Hebert |

Elizabeth~ Thank you. I am so thankful that I have a chance to share these 'researched' pieces. Duncan~ I am really glad to know that you found it so enjoyable. Thanks for letting me know. BettyLou~ Thank you so much. At it's prosperous height, Bodie had over 2000 structures ... the tragic fires and general decay has reduced that to less than 150 structures still standing. Thank goodness those are being preserved. *I appreciate each of you taking the time to read and enjoy this. *Hugs* ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ |

Haunting....I could feel it in the flow, the words and the pictures. This is a very polished piece. I had never been to a ghost town til now. Death comes not when we cease to breathe, but when we cease to dream. |
