I don't come here much anymore because I'm so invisible when I do, but I really wanted to share this morning with you. It's as if the environment really knows about our measurement of time and the 'rituals' we follow by its marking. Can You Feel It? can you feel it? can you smell it? I sense the edge of it both with skin and nose and just now, in the trickle of the wooden chimes I could hear it’s coming certainly summer, too, had the edge of warm in the early morn but now, as the cool hangs on to a later hour, the warm dwindles in its power yet autumn caresses my cheeks and arms the gentle breeze kisses and charms the heart of me it’s strange how the air feels like ‘school starting’ air ‘bell-ringing air’ school books, desks and chairs filled to the brim with her and him and Tim hopscotch and volleyball soccer and shining halls echoing laughter, excitement and joy of greeting friends and new faces that’s what tomorrow brings when the school bell rings © September 3, 2001 what’s really strange...it’s still way too warm for such a thing, but I could almost smell and feel the wood smoke of autumn fireplaces...maybe someone was having breakfast on the barbie *smile* [This message has been edited by VAS (edited 09-03-2001).] |

YES!! I feel it, and you penned my exact thoughts so well. I know I am not alone when I say I always feel a bit depressed this time of year. Autumn...the year's last, lovliest smile is almost here. Enjoyed this so much! Thank you. Nancy Lee. ~Somewhere in my heart I'm always |

Yes......up here I DO feel it!! And the wood stoves are burning, the Autumn rains have come, and the kiddies are back in school. Great one, VAS, as always you do, and you should still come here often to say hi to your old friends, like me!!!! The road goes on forever, and the stories never end... |

Thank you both so much. It's good to know others can sense this change as well. At least I'm not imagining it just because the calendar says autumn is fast approaching. |

You've never been invisible to me! I've always enjoyed your work! This a precious poem and tommorrow this setting becomes real. I think it's great virtual reality for the reader to visualize and it's painted within your words. Well done my friend! |

We can't feel it in Texas till Dec., but I felt it in you words. *S* Death comes not when we cease to breath, but when we cease to dream. |

thanks, loads, ethome! Yep school starts tomorrow in many cities. The town where I live is a week later than all the other districts close by. Partly because there's been construction going on to frantically be finished enough for kids/students to reenter buildings. AND we have one entirely new building, our fifth elementary school, Desert View, opening Tues. I wonder if I can get myself to go crash the party and watch it happen. LOL. Maybe I could write my next article in our local paper about it. I'm sure there will be regular, mainstream, articles. but I write a column that is conversational and pondering in style. So, hopefully I'd render a different flavor. |

Vas, Yes, I feel it. Every year at this time. A certain sadness, a longing. Well done. Life is not measured by breaths you take, but by moments that take your breath away. |

R.K. and Nightshade, thank you for reading and for the sweet comments. R.K. I was in San Antonio, Texas from November through March back in 1966/67. I must say the weather was pretty mild compared to that time in Salem, Oregon where I grew up, chronologically. Coming from a place where rain was might prevalent, it was quite an amazing thing when the San Antonio schools closed due to rain. Of course, the flooding, though not severe that year, is what caused the closures. Nightshade, I don't recall seeing your name before, but then I have senior moments, where names are concerned, quite often. I find myself wondering if you write mostly dark poetry as your pseudo makes me think of "Deadly Nightshade." I'm going looking for a piece by you. |

No, no I don't want to feel it. I want to believe it's still summer. Damn it. You MADE me feel it with your words Tracey If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please? |

Well, technically, it is still summer in North America until September 22 EST on my calendar. Ha-ha-ha-ha, the east coast gets it first. I'm way.............. out west. thanks for reading, Tracey, and for your fun comment. |

VAS This was an enchanting post. And yes, I can feel it, and I actually love the feeling. People seem to dress up more and they look so much better. and the different colors of Autumn seem to dress up Mother Nature. The smell of wood burning fires seems to be a natural perfume for "her" also. Step out your door and adore Mother Nature and inhale her perfume. Don't let it take your breath away. Garfield |

I think we are all more invisible. The more people who join, the faster the poems sink off of page one. Thus we are all read less and commented on less, just the dynamics. I read the front page and then I do what I call mining. I start at the back page and work toward the front. No one ever listened themselves into trouble. |

Wow! Lonely, that's a good technique and very thoughtful. I have, at times, looked for the poems with the fewest comments to read and comment to, though I know that that could keep me from reading a real treasure that many have read and enjoyed. But then, there just may be treasures that few are finding because they don't go in. So maybe it works out okay, too. Thanks for the response to my preface. |

Enjoyed this, V. I'm so season sensitive that I missed it when I lived in the islands. The islands were indeed sensual, but I still missed the stimulus of the seasons. Thanks. e |

thanks Krawdad and Ghost Writer...for reading and commenting...yes the seasons are an important part of the year's passing. in autumn, things are growing tired from their hard work of the growing season...then their reward is to rest in the winter months while awaiting the promise of spring, rebirth, new life, rejuvenation. |
