The Shores of Alone

0 posted 2001-09-02 04:02 PM

On the road to nowhere
heading east towards nothing
the black hole of New Hampshire
tries to swallow me whole
but surely, somewhere,
in this Godforsaken place,
there is something..
The sidewalks, what few there are, are crumpled,
treacherously emptying into nothing
the roads, leading nowhere special to begin with
are torn apart: "pavement ends"
seconds before you land in a rut
that could finish off your car if you cared.
Live Free or Die say the license plates-
a bit satiric considering men who molest children
live on every corner
and a mother cannot feed her children
in this fine state.
Earning eight dollars an hour is a great accomplishment here;
this just about enough to buy the gas to
get to the non place she tries to work at
until the useless fourth hand car breaks down
in the middle of the highway to hell
and of course there's no cell phone
and the children cry.
Yes,live free here, as long as you don't mind
going nowhere, to arrive at nothing.
And the children learn to hate
and the old ones who have been here too long
wear the same defeated expression
and blend into one non life
after another
and people kill squirrels on the road
because this place turned them mean
A place where a man can look his grandchild
square in the face, and say go away.
And if you don't leave soon
it will take all your dreams
and eat them.

Pardon the rant everyone, but take it as a warning that you don't ever want to move here...

Ah Cat, not at all what I expected...but seeing it through your eyes is to see history in the making...and the question is begged: what can be done?

A very good penning...

Wow did you ever trash New Hamphire! I always used to love driving through there in the fall.  The mountains and the Autumn leaves are beautiful!
No tax on liquor
Quaint little lakes and streams.
I guess none of that says anything about the economy and living conditions.....
Have a nice day and I hope you got all that stressful anger and those bad memories off your chest.  You see I don't really know anything about New Hampshire other than my brief vacations there!

Kari, thanks for reading through that whole rant, unfortunately, nothing can be done, it is worse every year. I escaped, and like a fool came back. But the next escape will be the last.

ET. yes, I suppose when you are not stuck here, there are some pretty spots. But the underbelly of the place is so ugly, you can't even imagine.
Thanks for listening.

You just gave Stephen King a run for his money, Sandra...  Perhaps Maine is better?  That is really one hell of a Twilight Zone/John Carpenterish description, right in the face of all the wonderful visions I had of the quaint Eastcoast autumn states...  This line really sticks like melted gum to my shoe:

A place where a man can look his grandchild
square in the face, and say go away.

Powerful write, indeed...  Ever see John Carpenter's "In The Mouth Of Madness"?  Highly recommended, if you haven't, but this kind of reminded me of that little town...

Mark, I have not seen that, but perhaps I should. By the way, Maine is about the same, except for the "particular" coastal regions. Maybe even worse..
Autumn is lovely here, if you are only looking at the visual, alas, there is so much more (or so much less)
Thanks for listening to the rant...

Oh man, this is powerful stuff. What a raw gritty, glimpse of it we see here. For a tourist it seems so lovely, but you have just given a very strong look at the other side. Not a good day for you my friend? I'd put some hugs on here, but I'm not that computer literate. I only know how to do smiley faces, and they don't seem appropriate with the picture you painted.

Alright guys, that's a wrap, stuff it, can it, box, seal it,  call FED-X and ship anywhere but here (and any other of the 49 or so places it could settle) and we'll rename the place NOWHERESVILLE!

Gee...never been there myself, but obviously it's a place You'd like to be FROM.  Still, I did enjoy the telling...but then look who wrote it!

hey sis!
Just had to read this, and now I am a believer! Of course, it described my little village here in Alaska, but on a much bigger scale!!! Wherever there's people, there's inhumanity.....no matter what the scenery looks like!

The road goes on forever, and the stories never end...

Sandra,
What a write! So dark, and so deep. I can relate, but unfortunately, this is the world we live in, and moving to another area may be more enlightening, but there's always underlying adversity no matter where you go.  I wish for you a better change in the near future.  Perhaps a place with more sun?
