I Wish I Could…
For Gwen Lister

I live in a dreary town,
Where life can pass you by,
Everyday I sit here on this kerbstone,
And all I seem to do is sigh.

I wish I could time travel,
I’d go back into the past,
And I’d rewrite our history,
I’d be someone at last.

I’d share my thoughts with Plato,
Debate with Socrates,
And I’d kiss fair Joan of Arc,
Beneath the stars in a summer breeze.

I’d give Hitler a right good kicking,
Be the friend Marilyn needed most,
I’d wake up next to Audrey Hepburn,
And probably cook her some toast.

I’d sing at gigs with Elvis,
And act with cool James Dean,
I’d sail the Titanic in another direction,
Escape with Steve McQueen.

I’d go mountain climbing with Moses,
Give the Virgin Mary a nice, big room,
And I’d be there when Lord Carnarvon,
Opened the boy king’s tomb.

What about your life, Gwen?
I know I’d change that now,
I’d undo the things he did to you,
Make it all better somehow.

But it’s all just fantasy,
A little dream of mine,
A silly notion really,
As if I could turn back time?

So I’ll get up off my kerbstone,
Now the sun is going down,
Another day wasted dreamily,
In this lost, forgotten town.

Don't discount fantasy too quickly -- it has a very strange way of tansmuting into reality sometimes, especially if it can catch us off guard...  Enjoyed.

The day is not wasted when you come up with poems like this. I really like it
