Marcy

Dead flowers
litter the ground,
crickets,
noisily chattering on my approach,
hide in the tall, brown grass,
more deadness obscuring
her headstone.
"Marcy" - the only word I can see,
Marcy…
another dead thing
in this place of death.
Another dead thing,
like me,
finally returning
after so many years of pretending,
of saying all I had to do
was pick up the telephone,
or knock on her door,
or wait for her on the park bench
where we always sat.
Death lingers all around me,
it lays in hundreds of rectangular boxes
beneath the ground,
surrounding Marcy with death.
Walking away,
just as I did fifteen years ago,
I bleed with every footstep,
my insides knotting in pain,
but unable to cry this time.
All the tears were used this morning
when I laid her mother beneath the flowers
beside her.

Oh wow. That is just so moving. What emotion I can't say anything else.

this isn't just sorta sad, it's heartbreaking and painful to read. You did this gently.

It is sad, although I'm not fully sure I understand Marcy's relationship to you. It may just be because I am so tired. Forgive me for not quite understanding.

Thanks for your comments and especially your read my friends...this came about because I had read the piece entitled "Dead Leaves" and when I left the internet it stuck with me so I typed "Dead Flowers" into Word to see if it would go anywhere and a few minutes later...this appeared.

Funny how pieces start, isn't it.
