Afternoon Chord (I)

Draped in yellow sleeves
of the birch tree
              afternoon sends
              her last moments off.

              Branches lift
pushing  dovetail shadows of sky
              into a deeper gray.

From the porch
I   glimpse rain
              as  wind pricks her finger
on a dark spindle of pine.

             Time weeps
             and like Autumn, I shimmer
             in cold sorrow --
                              waiting for you.

               EVENING CHORD (II)

              Night dangles her  hair
over the moon’s white brow.
as branches lattice the wind.

               Tinges of leaf  fray
to brown wings --tatting pink lace
and love disrobes slowly
               .
untangling  the long sash of time
dipping bare thought
into a pool of shadows.

Evergreen ripples
outward in its clean scent
of  memory
and I succumb to sleep,

             to the soft sound
             of your footsteps returning
             home from the city.
