Three I still recall the day he died The way he looked, the way I cried Assasination was a term A nation's soul was forced to learn We stood and watched the tragic stage The turning of life’s fateful page A little son stood tall and proud Saluting to a weeping crowd I still recall the night he fell I heard the victory voices swell And then a shot rang through the hall That pierced the spirit of us all The victory train then headed home The candidate, deceased, alone In silence as the nation waved And others marched on streets he paved I still recall the balcony Where someone set his spirit free A single blast would muffle all The words he etched upon the mall An instant bullet tore apart A dream that echoed from his heart A dream that marched through future time Repeating words he left behind Now history will inscribe it all The rise to fame, the tragic fall And will record the noted facts The words of wisdom, gallant acts But we who witnessed tragic loss Of three who bore the nation’s cross Still remember of the three Justice, hope and charity In every heart - in every stream Still flow the words - “I have a dream” Elizabeth Santos |

Liz, this is simply superb. Wonderful in cadence and rhyme, and so beautifully phrased in sentiment and tribute to these fallen men whose dreams live on through their memories. Truly a wonderful piece ... perfectly captured. Best wishes, /Kit |

This is one of your best, Liz... The sixties were quite the years, weren't they? These three men, two of them brothers and one a leader in civil rights, all died trying to make this country a better place. Your work continues to astound me, my friend.. Wonderful.. |

sometimes. . . I wonder what we'd be like. . . had they all lived. . . would we be better because they lived? Or, are we better because they died? Only history will tell the answers. . . superbly done my friend. . . superbly. . . To the world, you may only be one person. But to one person, you may be the world. |

You do them and all they stood for very proud and this is probably one of the most beautifully and artfully done tributes to them that I have read. Your verse is superb in rhyme and cadence and the emotions and memories you bring up are due to the high quality of writing you share with us. A very powerful write. |

This is wonderful Elizabeth. You worked all of them into it without a falter. Marvelous. I still remember that day too. I was at work at the radio station when it came over the teletype. We crowded around not believing our eyes. We discarded those sheets of paper, not realizing we were throwing away history. Joyce |

THank you so much for all the kind comments and for your interest in this poem. I witnessed the California incident as it happened on TV. The other two after the fact. They were chilling events and that was a decade of turmoil for sure. THank you again for your responses Liz |
