Pool Side Ramblings It seemed a good idea, at first, to gather at the new public swimming pool, a miniature water park, really, four pools graduating from dinky to Olympic, with kid-controlled fountains and jumbo squirt guns aimed at unsuspecting newcomers; giant slides bearing sponsorship of arches golden, and Coca Cola tiles dotting the cement. Oldies played from loud speakers, creating a beach party air; once fears that our children might drown or disappear had passed, we engaged in simple pleasures - people watching while sucking on cherry slushies. I compared the women of this infamous Folsom Blues town to the Stepford-like burg of my recent past, where thinness meant acceptance, passing this trait on to daughters who often suffered from Anorexia Nervosa. Not so in Folsom, where one-piece bathing suits rule women’s fashions and the average Dad easily tipped the scales at two hundred pounds. As “Loveshack” filled the oil-and-chlorine scented air, one such Father stood up in the shallow pool, reached his arms straight for the sky and danced. Alright, Dad! Another squeezed himself into the kiddy water slide, as the crowd held its collective breath to see if it would hold. It was amazing to see, also, that teenage girls still use baby oil to fry themselves, recent warnings be damned. As the hour reached two, we realized the pool was packed we had no idea where our kids were. Rounding them up from the herd, we plied them with hot dogs and lemonade, deciding that a hundred degrees was hot enough for parents who did not bring suits. © 2001 Corinne Bailey All Rights Reserved [This message has been edited by Corinne (edited 08-19-2001).] |

SO if you have sun to spare send it me, I badly need some uv. enjoyed the read, you painted this very well with a keen eye and sharp wit. Ah, CitizanX, and I would gladly trade you this sun for your rain. It hasn't rained here since May. Thanks you! Corinne |

Sigh, remember those public pools, polio scares in the summer, ear infections rampant, cannonball cities...loved every moment of them... thanks for some memories, Cor, hon...nicely written and brings it right to you |
