Morning Cool

morning cool
the tiniest touch of autumn
on the horizon
then the day
full force of summer
melts into reality
carves cracks into hard ground
packed like clay
from irrigation’s play
flower heads droop
cats stretch over side-walked shade
dogs dangle tongues
from serrated edges
worms burrow deep into the soil
seeking the cool moisture
that’s withstood the drying of the hour
heat waves sear rumba striations
of vertical streams toward old Sol
their dance-creations
mirage an oasis
toward which to crawl
shadows shrink
in ever more direct
heat of midday
and I
I remain still
waiting
pondering
shadows lengthened reach
toward the cool of evening’s game

Liked the concrete images
posed in an original voice
wish I had some morning cool
right now

Thank you cindi, poetsguild and Krawdad!  I'm so happy you enjoyed the read and took time to encourage my efforts.I hope you get some cool, too, poets. Our morning cool yesterday seared to a 103 degree day downtown.

Virginia, this is one of your better pieces...the imagery, the sound, the feel...
