Chinook Gypsies By: Noah Eaton 7/6/01 Rustling against the Pacific coast These Chinook gypsies glissade back and forth Red hair reflecting the salmon sunset Chasing the wind wherever it may implore Velveteen echoes blanket the bay Matrimony showers heard from hundreds of miles around To where Mother Nature kisses the deep blue ocean Uniting the boldest of sisterhoods, as these Gypsies sail about Daughters of Toolux, the South Wind, the summoner of the Chinook Creating the great Hahness from a whale, whose eggshells became these people These Chinook gypsies route out the same course as their ancestors Through the Wapato Lowlands and down to where the ebb flows Waving vapor ribbons in rhythmic motion Rocking Nature’s mother to dream in Her ocean Chinook whispers breaching the turquoise moon Diamonds of the deep comb the seashore in high-tide notion Disciples of diplomacy, seen to “She Who Watches” Where this dancing coyote ruminates on her red rock Playing her myrtlewood flute above the riverbed Daughters-in-vision dancing among the buoyant flocks Yes, I can hear the lost words of the Chinook echo through my ears Traversing their grounds of triumphs and tears Yet the Chinook still live on, long as the wind will ever blow Reciting their spirits for many coming years |
