The Watermelon Grass I knew it then, and I try not to know it now, but it does. The watermelon grass grows thick in the backwoods of my life. In alternating greens and in deep shades of pink and red, the grass grows wild, and faries run through it. But I run from them, and I usually fall so I have to smell the red and sense the tang again and hear the fairies laugh quietly (at me?) where I leave grassy footprints messy, I know. To a place like none other, they take me. It smells smooth and sounds large and there are flashing brilliant colors, I am a bloodcell in a stream of bloodcells I can see the life tones of the skin! From the inside out bright but withering in the footfalls of the Sun, a giant orange looming on the horizon, pulp oozing out of every pore, flowing down my throat, is a burning stream of fire. The fairies drop my corpse. I rise and run again. Run from the Backwoods, and the grassy trails where fairies live. Only to find that I’ve fallen again into the wet familiar smell of the watermelon grass. |

Sunnnnnnshine! It wasn't a dream! But I guess it could have been. I wrote it when I was sitting in the kitchen looking at a watermelon. Voiceless - thank you for reading twice. I'm glad you found it interesting. ![]() |
