Well, he's done it again.
Put his foot in it and dirtied his shoe.
And he has no one to blame but him.

What is it he can do
but pull it out and go on
with dirt on his tongue.

Oh, the thing he has done.
What?  Why, the terrible long word,
of course.  Six syllables.  Uggh!
How could he do such a thing?
It was a lapse.  He thought they knew.
Please forgive him.  He forgot
what mommy never said,
that what they said they like
she didn't
and little boys only say it in spite.

And please forgive him
his belief in the unreal
that unlike things can be better
by linking them together.
Better to say all those syllables
one at a time.
Forgetting, that was most unkind.

If the world were blind,
he could understand.
If the world were stupid,
he could understand.
If the world were ignorant,
he could understand that too.

But none of that is true.
Not this world.  Not here.
It's something else,
something almost scary
It slips on by,
as in another vocabulary.

What was it mommy said?
Mind your manners.
Wipe your shoes.
Sit straight, elbows off the table.
Clean your room.
And bad words just will not do.

Daddy never said such things.
But he never said it wasn't true.
Daddy didn't say much of anything,
really.  Well, that's old news.
Daddy sits somewhere else,
some other place.
Look.  See?
My daddy has no face.

Oh, the bad, bad thing he has done.
Good daddy.
Bad boy.

Fortunately, it's only a vocabulary of one.
