Someone called me pretty today
And it took me by surprise
It has been so long since I’ve felt
Pretty in someone’s eyes

He wasn’t looking for a thank you
He didn’t know I’d heard
But I blushed and felt so very flattered
By such a simple word

I smiled like I haven’t
And strutted about in pride
Someone called me pretty today
And it warmed my heart inside

So I called someone pretty tonight
She was someone I didn’t know
But I felt so good from my compliment
And I wanted that good to grow

So as I shopped in the grocery store
I pointed to an older cashier
Said in a voice she could hear
“My she’s pretty isn’t she dear?”

And she was truly lovely
And her face took quite a glow
So if you see someone pretty (or handsome)
You should let them know

And remember beauty isn’t just outside
But inside all of us too
To treat each other with kindness
No matter what else in life we do.

Let my words fall first upon deaf ears before a closed mind...

Ahh, as my old grandmum was so fond of saying, "pretty is, as pretty does", and you did a very nice job of being pretty...nice write...gentle smile

I never knew how much it meant to be treated with kindness...until I was treated callously.  Thanks for the reminder that I can make someones day with a considerate word.

I agree totaly! Beauty on the inside is of the upmost, and to pass a kind word is to show your inner beauty.
Good poem, pretty one.

Isn't it funny how those simple lessons we learned as children are the ones repeated throughout life??

This was sweet and poignant.  As long as a compliment is stated honestly and with no ulterior motive, then indeed, it is a genuinely good thing which can make someone happy, and you have illustrated this very nicely here.  Congratulations on a powerful realization.

Thank you Mark.  That was indeed my motive.
