What is a poem?
...one might ask,
The answer not,
...a simple task,
Writing words,
...that sound the same,
Is it but,
...a writing game?
Penning thoughts,
...of life sublime,
Within the frame,
...of metered rhyme,
Or is it more,
...a subtle art,
To bare one's soul,
...express one's heart,
To laugh, to cry,
...to live and die,
To tell the world,
...the reasons why,
T'was once written,
..."shall never see,"
And with this thought,
...one must agree,
A poem is,
...but written word,
Of what will be,
...what has occured,
A snapshot of,
...our mortal soul,
The beauty of,
...what makes us whole,
A baby born,
...a mother dies,
Small children laugh,
...a father cries,
What is a poem?
...'tis spring's first rose,
A summer breeze,
...'tis heart's disclose,
Pen and paper,
...meld as one,
As poet's work,
...is never done.

What music this that stirs within mine soul,
With thoughts sublime, from gods on clouds above?
A tender word, that doth on heart inscroll,
Brings forth sweet memories of life and love,
As nightingale, on wing in evening sings,
Soft melodies, that touch mine soul within,
And free the heart, to fly on feathered wings,
To rise above, to calm our daily din,
A soothing balm, one's pain in comfort frees,
Love's madrigal, flows forth from goddess lips,
As gentle wind, upon life's satin seas,
Doth fill with grace, the sails of passion ships,
What creature this? What magic to hold dear?
'Tis sonnet's voice, that in mine heart doth hear.

Mike~
These are two beautifully crafted pieces ~

'A poem is,
...but written word,
Of what will be,
...what has occured,
A snapshot of,
...our mortal soul,
The beauty of,
...what makes us whole'

And in the penning ... we are made whole !
I adore that thought.

Ihave a friend who says poetry has even more defintions than poets. Something about most writers of verse rely on a multitude of defintions.
Having whatched the many-faceted lives of humans, I cannot but agree, poetry seems an absolute only in its subjectivity.

If you put these words in prose, they wouln't have the same impact as they do in poetry. Simple words and yet so special.
Loved it.

Studying you again...loved the set-up before the sonnet Mike...as always perfect meter and the phrasing is extraordinary...Mind if I shelve this in my library?   Hope not!

...a subtle art, indeed...
of reaching out to entwine, just
as you have done...
