The Legend of Hummingbird and Crane

In the land of Cherokee,
Dwelt a maiden, fair to see.
Hummingbird and crane were each
Smitten with this southern peach!
So they talked and both agreed
That there was a serious need.
One of them must go away.
Then they heard the maiden say,
They should fly a race to see
Whose bride she would finally be!

Around the world was the course
And returning to the source.
Off they went.  The hummingbird
Thought it really quite absurd!
After all, he was so fast.
He didn't think the crane would last.
Every night, he stopped to rest,
Confident he was the best.
Crane, however, flew all night
And was quickly out of sight.

Time went by and then one day,
Crane appeared and made his way
To the maiden's house to wed.
When she saw him though, she said
He was much too plain and gray.
She was teasing anyway!
Left him standing in the dirt.
Tired, mad and mostly hurt!
He launched an aerial display,
Which he uses, still, today.

So when you see his frenzied dance,
You'll know it's rooted in romance!

BettyLou~
You certainly have a knack for this ! !
How wonderful to share the legends in such an appealing form.

It's just so enjoyable to read your pieces.

....this was a great story.  Now, is it the hummingbird flaps his wings so fast in a failed attempt to catch up..... huuuuuuuuuuum, I wonder?

Lighthousebob:  You are probably right!  All these years the hummingbird has been trying to catch up!

Eye candy, for sure!  At first, I thought the rhyme pattern was too quick, but I fell into the melody of it readily, and it turned out to add much flavor!     Thanks for sharing
