Listening to every heart

0 posted 2001-07-08 12:53 PM

Give Her Play

when we children would
feel it time
to allow your old self
to once again find
you
we had a secret
whispered from child’s
lip to ear
you never heard us whisper
quietly clear,

make her play

even when things and times
were easier
for what we know now
we didn’t know then
stress was stress was
stress
we had a secret
whispered,
lip to ear
quietly clear,

get her to play

so one child would
begin to
hum,
another would pick up the
key
one would then begin to
sing
before too long you’d
join our ring

but we were not yet done

and if we could guide you
in, glide you
to the world within
where you heart was still
so packed away
if a cajole could get you
to play

the piano

a little wheedle, a lot of
pleas

would you do this for us,
please?

and some times we would grab
your hand,
lead you to your upright grand
watch you dip your fingers
in cream
then gaze upon those
hidden dreams

for your face would smooth in long
unbidden your hands formed song
soon to be lost in reverie
as you played for all of we

your present would fade away
young again in a world at bay
the one you had left
far behind
silently watch you slowly
unwind

soon, all would drift absent
you were far gone
and heaven bent
our gift to you,
on stress filled days
to lead you to song
and some

piano play

Music calms the soul. This is a tender poem that I enjoyed much. Much feeling for someone from the past.

This seemed to flow like a comforting melody from days of youth.  I liked this very much!

Sunshine--I have a piano that does just this, and has for many years.  Thank you for reminding me in this wonderful poem!

I've never seen "wheedle" used in a poem and you do it, and similar things, so naturally....one of the reasons why you are a pleasure to read...
