(To be recited like The Fresh Prince with the energy of The Beastie Boys -- the "all-caps" words need extra emphasis between multiple voices in unison.) It... Was... A... Friday night and there was nothing to do: I was really very bored, and my friends were too. Then suddenly we got an idea between us: How about we go and cruise Main Street, SALINAS? True we'd done it before -- it was nothing new, But we didn't care and didn't want to argue. Creativity just then was really quite lacking... Anyways it sure beat staying at HOME SLACKING! We took two cars to get to where we were going: Mike's old Ford and Steve's dad's TR-8 without his knowing. After parking the Maverick, our arrogance grew As we piled in the Triumph, and the next thing we knew: We were cruising through Salinas in the hot convertable Two-seater SPORTS CAR stuffed with five PEOPLE! The top was down, and we were having a blast -- There were cars all around so we couldn't go fast. We were bumper-to-bumper -- we were going so slow, But we didn't complain 'cause it was like a car show! We saw a tricked-out Mercedes and a Beemer that looked great, Still they couldn't compare to Steve's dad's TR-8. Crankin' up the tunes, we saw girls everywhere! As we looked at them, they returned our stare. It didn't take long before we all could see: We were the center of attention (which was fine BY ME!) So we're cruisin' down the street, loving every minute of it When somebody signals us and we think nothing of it. In the other lane, a few cars ahead, A siren and red light indicate: We're dead! The cop turns around and tells us to pull aside; We realize then it's the end of our joy-ride. So the cop writes us up for a "moving violation" While cruisers stare and honk -- talk about humiliation! It wasn't so bad for Steve, Mike, or me: We were all eighteen or older and didn't have to worry About our parents finding out, 'cause they didn't have a clue! Had Steve's dad found the Triumph gone, Steve's life would have been through! With Mike it didn't matter, and my mom would never know 'Cause I'd intercept the mail, avoiding the deadly blow. Chris lucked out sitting in the passenger's seat; His seat-belt buckled on, he didn't get the cop's sheet. But Jason had it worst being still seventeen: A week shy of his birthday, but the cop was pretty mean. This meant Jason was in trouble 'cause his dad would have to know And to make the matters worse, they would both have to go To Salinas to the Municipal Court to pay the fine... We all knew that Jason would be walking on a thin line. And although our cruise ended up pretty much like crap, It was worth it anyways 'cause now we've got this Main Street Rap! Thanks, Ron... this "rap" was quite a lark, actually, since I'm really not into that style of music, but this was kind of an "homage" to the Salinas scene at that time since rap was just becoming very popular in the late 80's and ALL the cruisers would be "bumping" it, so I thought I'd tell a story through a "Beastie Boys kind of sound"... Yes indeed, SEA, it was a BLAST! One of those "mischievous days of youth"... Makes for a smile when reflecting in a gloomy mood. Thanks for reading. Thanks, Juan -- glad you enjoyed it. -MVS "If you think you know it all, you have a lot to learn." |

I'm not quite a "Beasties" Girl, but the story was fun. And it looks like you guys were up to no good those days. ![]() Sandra |

Innocent fun, Sandra. You probably know how small towns are -- you've got to think of things to do to have fun when you're young and there's "nothing" going on... Cruising was a colossal waste of time, but once in a while, especially as in the scenario presented, it could be fun, just for the sake of being with a bunch of friends... -MVS "If you think you know it all, you have a lot to learn." |
