Exodus Revisited ~ Part Two

leaving CA roots second time,
remainders of one’s family
left behind on purpose,
tugging at the binds~that~tie

before, always a promise
in hand, now,
promises in the wind

road to Heaven lies easterly
still, still,
western culture

having once seen Kansas, no
fear, only questioning
how to hold firm
in Kansa winds
tie it down, somehow
mulch it ~
wondering, would this transplant take…

first overnight in Nevada, two
kids, one cat, one dog, a couple
spent, leaving
animals in room, to rest,
quickly, eat supper,
upon return
stare…

panicked dog, a lap’s pet,
harboring fears unknown,
in desperation
dug through carpet to find
its family…

$50 added to morning’s bill
lessons learned, don’t leave
dog alone, leave
someone behind,
bring food back…no chastisement
except on ourselves…

Salt Lake City, C’B’d plans
to stop, let kids dip toes in
buoyancy, asking “what’s that dark we
see on shoreline….” a voice
like God’s breaker, breaking in “folks,

don’t let the kids in the water,
those are saltflies
it’s not safe,
be well,”

then disappeared into space, as
voices do…so we only stopped to
stretch legs, take
memories held in Polaroid

travel on to see
a shyster taking us up
and in, as I drove forward in camper,
dark blonde, single woman with two kids
cat, dog, while he, behind me,
didn’t come, U-Drive-It still gassed by
diesel….

owner and real operator of
stop, motioning me forward, giving
hand signals as if I, a passenger
flight of hundreds in tow, shaking his head
as if, oh so, stressing at my plight

convincing husband who strode up
in hindsight that “she must have felt
problems with the steering”
wondering myself if I had dreamed
last hundred miles, what was he
talking about…

we were about to be scammed….
in a tourist’s town…

he convinced him, “stay overnight”
parts needed ordering
walked cross highway, where
off-season rates
greeted us, beautiful place…
good thing he talks to others,
found out of historical scams

still, staying overnight, surroundings
soothed, skimming cream off
of potential misadventures
for he had returned, tore up the
ticket, saying “we’ll trust our luck…”

not leaving four or five C’s
behind….

hit the road, calm coffee’d nerves, CB directions
of dead ahead but not seen around
U-Drive-It, hoping brakes brake…
praying silent get me over the mountain
prayersthendowndowndown
into Nebraska, so green, so, so, so…
humid

one more night, conserve, conserve,
we had the good time in Park City
getting had, the best night
this whole time
now, hunker down a few bucks
never mind AC not working mid
June, it’s not hot, yet….hello, 92 plus….

up and up, almost “home” to a home
turn south, 81 takes us up
heading toward
what doesn’t know three of four of us but
we hope,
hope is what transplants thrive on…

Joads we were not, at least not one of
four of us,
so we slid into his town, his roots,
ground rising up and around us, welcoming,
welcoming, feeling the mulch

lamp’s light of eve, sitting, reviewing
what is left of what once was
nervously anticipating dreams
as they are now spoken
to others,
believing, believing

in facing the future

yet again

Interloper, I too, was quite tired afterwards...thanks for noticing...

Kitten...yes...it is amazing that eleven years ago....these thoughts roamed and I had no idea that I would ever take up pen, and paper, or keyboard...and write it down...it is quite...wonderful to do so....

Karilea~
Oh, my gosh ! !
Long, but WONDERFUL ...
aren't the best memories like that ???

Laughing quite out loud at -

'upon return
stare…

panicked dog, a lap’s pet,
harboring fears unknown,
in desperation
dug through carpet to find
its family…

$50 added to morning’s bill
lessons learned, don’t leave
dog alone'

For our family pet, it was a $700.00 sofa ! !

Sorry for the Long, Marge....didn't know where to break it off....that, or another sequel....

you would have stared, too...poor pup's paws bloody raw digging into the carpet pile's tacks....trying to get to us....we didn't know....

animals...or at least mine....are so HUMAN...

perhaps because I treat them so....

Thanks for the read, White Feather....

What a journey, made all the more epic and beautiful by your keen sense of observation and by the worth of your pen. Wonderfully written, Karilea
