The Shell

by Michael

Washed upon sands,
stranded by receding tide,
a shell.

I walked the beach that morning,
watching as the sun
broke over the ocean,
spreading crimson light
and turning the waters to fire.

There, half buried,
was a tiny conch.

Pink and tinged with green,
I marveled at its design.
I always have.
A conch
is my favorite type of shell.

In my saltwater aquarium
is an old conch,
a foot or more in length.
The fish often use it as a home.

This tiny conch
would take fifty or more years
to reach that size.

Walking to the waters edge,
I gently placed the shell
in the wet sand.
Sure enough,
within a minute it began moving,
inhabited by a tiny hermit crab
with a large blue claw.

I watched in fascination
as the small crab
made its way back into the sea.

I liked the theme of cycles undercurrent in this...returning to whence we came. Enjoyed this much, Michael!

I've walked the Pacific shores, and the Gulf of Florida's Tampa Bay...I bring more shells home than an average tourist, and now I know why....

shells are our beginnings....
