My Dog Billy by Michael Oh my dog fell out of the pickup and he broke his dadburn neck. He didn't have much to live for, so he really didn't give a heck. He used to chase them rabbits out in the woods afar, but he fell out of the pickup and got squashed by a big green car. Oh I worked all day and I worked all night, trying to forget my grief, but the grief kept building in me. It just wouldn't let me be. Because Billy was my only dog. The onliest dog I ever knowed. The onliest dog I ever cared to call me friend. Oh my dog fell out of the pickup and I'll miss him every day. He won't be near beside me when I go to church to pray. He hunts in the woods in Heaven and he chases rabbits still, but there ain't no pick-ups there, so Billy cain't get killed. (again) He used to foller with me when I walked down to the store and brought me back a sixpack, but that's to be no more. I buried him in the pasture and I carved him out a stone. I even buried with him his favorite chewed-up bone. Oh Billy's gone forever now. I put him in the pasture with the cow. I planted flowers on him, because I loved him so. I'm lonelier than I ever was and the onliest reason is becuz he fell out of the pickup and now he's gone. I sometimes think I hear him in the stillness of the night. I fumbled for the string that turns on the bedroom light. But the barking it ain't Billy's, because he cain't bark no more. It's just some idiot neighbor's dog scratching at my door. I was in my garden t'other day pulling at some weeds, when up there strolled a puppy, trampling all my seeds. He took a liking to me and I patted him on the head. I've been feeding him all my table scraps, my beans and my cornbread. I think I'll call him Billy. Cain't think of another name. He's uglier than Billy was, but he kinda looks the same. The next time I hear scratching, I'll know whose dog it is. I'll let ole Billy in and give him a great big kiss. Oh I won't let him ride in the bed, Because old Billy did and got killed real dead. He rides up front with me, with his seatbelt on. I gave up all the beer I drunk, when the possum I ate was really a skunk. I knowed my eyes was damaged from alcohol. I've really missed my Billy and I know that this is silly, but if you wuz a dumb ole Southern hick I think you'd understand. It's better than watching the cars all rust and this gave you a laugh I trust. If you've never known a Southern hick, well now you do. Michael Auguste~ |

The gammit of emotions from one end t'other, seems that Billy was less a dog and much more like a brother. Well now, yer doin' better things now for this here new Billy you be totin' Glad yer not puttin' to the bed ner drinkin' what's verboten.
