Medicine Hat
By: Noah Eaton
6/25/01

Wild ponies stride gallantly in the white sage prairies
Blue corn empires swaying through the hillsides in the wind like gypsy dancers
A medicine man’s lost tears are the remedies of pride
Hence his hat sits still, sunflower fields soused in His remedies

Watching the sun rise, holding a tomahawk in his hand
Red Earth watches the smoke rise from the campfire
Surrounded by his elders that have vowed to make spiritual sacrifices
Sitting on red rocks nestled within a suffusing valley of lush green land

He sits high on his white horse, opening the doors to the vastness of the Great Spirit
Sacrifices never limited, every person dancing to life, breaking to the sunrise
Drummers roaring to homage and well-being, energizing the skies with electricity
Spiritual passions counted to the addictive rambling of the drumbeats beating with a brave clinched fist

Choctaw mothers hold their children close to their bosoms
In a Blessing Of  The Children, setting the future at the fork of the Red Road
Voices of ancestors whispering into the hearts of their great grandchildren
Cradled between the spirits of a bear and a falcon, learning to brave, to grace, to overcome

Losses healed through profusive tears in the Wiping Of Tears ceremony
Releasing all that must be released, regardless of how many tears are shed
Dancers summoning the holy spirits to mend the heaviness
Two soft healing hands stroking both side of ones face, feathered by the medicine man, the souls fidelity

The Healing Ceremony follows, convalescing for the sake of mankind
Healing all physically, emotionally, and spiritually
Standing tall in emptiness, struggling to balance like a rafter in a hurricane
Healing in the Dance Of Life until you feel nothing but to be, in heart and mind

Red Earth smiles as all his believers feel the essence of life, bequeathing non-existence
Every lost prayer and blessing again gracing the valley
All the sacrifices of the dancers acknowledged through song
While Red Earth launches the eagle, reminding how close Essence is

Red Earth paints a smile as he rides off into the distance
As many of His white-maned brothers eat the wild grass within the blue corn paradise
Grazing on a sacred land governed by the Earth Mother
Topped with the medicine hat, for all who find it be embraced by the ulterior spirit
