So you want to be a cowboy, You want to ride the range? You're tired of city livin'- And you're ready for a change? You want to ride the roundups? Brand calves and stuff like that? You've got your Acme boots on, And brand new Wal-Mart hat? But take time to consider, Just what you're bitin' off. It sure ain't like the movies- The way of life ain't soft... You'll work from day light thirty- Until the moon is high. The wages are so pitiful, It almost makes you cry. You'll take a lot of bruises- You're always stiff and sore. You'll wonder why you do it- And still you'll ask for more... You'll age before you know it, It is a tiresome life. Your kids will hardly know you, And neither will your wife... So you want to be a cowboy? You have to try your luck? Fine! It's time to gather- You get to drive the truck! |

"You want to ride the roundups? Brand calves and stuff like that? You've got your Acme boots on, And brand new Wal-Mart hat?" Wonderful Gunslinger! Oh, I loved that verse above ... amazing how some can idealize something until they really get in that saddle themselves and give it a whirl. Great poem, I really enjoyed this. ![]() Best wishes, /Kit |

Yes, what happened to the days of when you had to ride your horse to round up those steers. Nowadays it's by truck or in some cases helicopter. They just don't make cowboys like they use to. Enjoyed very much as always. |

Gunslinger, this is great and you paint a very different picture than the one most have in their minds. Now I have to get the dust off my jeans and start dinner. ME |

Gunslinger: A winner as usual. We don't see nearly enough of your poetry but it's always worth the wait! Betty Lou Hebert |

day light thirty... It's been a while since I've heard it, but what a smile that expression brings! *S* This is great, GS... and no sir, nope, no way... I don't wanna BE a cowboy! *G* (But if one's handy for smooching, I'll give proper appreciation. *G*) |

I love the line about the wal-mart hat. I grew up on a farm and I now live in the city. I live in Calgary and when the Calgary Stampede is on, everyone in town has a "wal-mart" hat on, not having any idea what being a cowboy is really about. I love this poem, it hit right in the nose.
