Where Willows Sing Where willows sing and swallows call And waters from the foothills fall The purple martin finds a hedge To perch along the water’s edge I placed a gourd, a little dome That he would find to make a home On bough of needled evergreen To mark his yearly spring routine The swallows come a thousand fold And stay until the winds grow cold Before the fall of downy flake In grasses near the hidden lake More splendor I have never seen Than here among the hills of green The purple martins come to use The summer home that I would choose Elizabeth Santos |

Ah yes....we have our purple martins here, and I love to go out into the country and have them chase us around as we kick up bugs from the tall grasses into the air.... their aerial antics are a delight for the eyes.... |

Such a pleasant and rhythmic read. Well done. My hobby is woodworking and I was going to build a bird house for martins this weekend until I saw the compexity. I have put if off for a few weeks |

THanks, bird lovers, for your kind responses to this poem. The purple martin is a swallow, and swallows tend to go back to the same place every year. LIz |
