Where Willows Sing

Where willows sing and swallows call
And waters from the foothills fall
The purple martin finds a hedge
To perch along the water’s edge

I placed a gourd, a little dome
That he would find to make a home
On bough of needled evergreen
To mark his yearly spring routine

The swallows come a thousand fold
And stay until the winds grow cold
Before the fall of downy flake
In grasses near the hidden lake

More splendor I have never seen
Than here among the hills of green
The purple martins come to use
The summer home that I would choose

Ah yes....we have our purple martins here, and I love to go out into the country and have them chase us around as we kick up bugs from the tall grasses into the air....

their aerial antics are a delight for the eyes....

I've never seen a purple martin or swallow...it seems I've been missing out.  This is such a pretty poem, Liz.  I much enjoyed.

Such a pleasant and rhythmic read.  Well done.
My hobby is woodworking and I was going to build a bird house for martins this weekend until I saw the compexity. I have put if off for a few weeks

THanks, bird lovers, for your kind responses to this poem. The purple martin is a swallow, and swallows tend to go back to the same place every year.

Loved the visit to the hidden lake and the tiny piece of your heart reserved for purple martin care.  Nice one!

THank you all, and Marge, leave it to you to find purple martins to compliment this poem and a link to the little travelers.
THanks to all
