Pictures Virginia Salter you’re thirty now quite grown having attended college in the world having gained a degree in life having shared also had stolen your heart you’ve gained thoughts; borrowed thoughts thrown them back and found your own yes, you’ve grown here, on a shelf a dusty shelf sit eight books eight albums and in a myriad of other nooks pictures of your first twelve years the focus of our lives, our love, our reasons snapped hundreds of times recording your milestones then it happened we were rent asunder pictures stopped as if it was all over as if the recording of the rest of your history was moot too painful to record in photographic memory and now do we pull the books down do we open them to enjoy your history your childhood when lovely innocence reigned it seems we do not is it that we cannot bear the reminder the record of who and what we were family could we do, as some, cut away the missing piece pretend it was not there so we don’t have to mourn we cannot, so we do not and daughter I do so miss the record of the two of us as family six years of your life thankfully still a glimmer in our hearts and minds in some ways it may be easier this way I don't know, for we cannot change it now © June 29, 2000 |
