Dorothy Does Hollywood

~*Marge Tindal*~

Skin of color ~ cafe au lait
Smoothly toned with poetic voice
Hollywood star seeking to shine
But black was not the color of choice

Movies made, not met with success
Determinedly driven was this diva of song
with Otto Preminger as daring Director
Carmen Jones finally came along

Academy nomination in finest review
Best Actress category, quite surprising
Lost out to Grace Kelly, a new star rising

Porgy And Bess followed with some success
A Golden Globe Award in her hands did rest
But Dorothy's life was on a downhill slide
alcohol and anti-depressants led to her demise

Dorothy Dandridge
November 9, 1922 - September 8, 1965

*This one is a special gift
to Mysteria, my sweet friend*
Happy You-Know-Who-You-Are Day !

Lovely tribute, Marge, gentle smile, and she should have gotten it for Carmen Jones. Very wonderful of you to post this one, she should not be forgotten

She did indeed have a tragic ending to such brilliant talent.

The story of Dorthy Dandridge is a sad one. Life is a steady erosion for some. Our bias is truly our shame in this country. We miss much while wearing our blinders.

You did it!  And...you did her proud.  She lead the way for African Americans, and she should never, ever be forgotten.  Marge, you put a whole new meaning into - "ask and it shall be given", and it is a wonderful feeling! Thank you!  From me and from her too!

Logan~
I'm pleased to know that you enjoyed this one.
Thanks for letting me know.

Eye~
Thank you for the read.

Julian~
Yes, dear poet ... in spite of how far we've come
We've still got a LONG way to go.
Thank you for enjoying it.

Mysteria~
For you, my friend ...
I enjoyed researching her life for this one.
Her mother, Ruby, schooled the three sisters in poetry recitals !

Were you aware that Dorothy also had a daughter born retarded. For many years after Dorothy's death the girl was still institutionalized somewhere in California.
I would assume she has since passed on, but couldn't find any other information on her.

I hope Dorothy found some happiness in her life, she did make a difference for those who followed in Hollywood.
... such a young tragic ending.
*Hugs*
