Ever had a butterfly in a jar when you were a kid? You’d sit and watch it inside the jar and be so amazed by it you'd walk around and be so careful with that jar punch holes in the top with a screwdriver so that it wouldn't die You’d never show your friends fearing they might throw your jar and ruin your treasure You always know you can't keep it because it'll die and it’s not fair but you want to so bad you want to believe that it'll live forever “i end up letting it go” “yes, I always did too” well… you you're like my butterfly in a jar. I want you as bad as I wanted to keep that butterfly when I was a kid. I can't imagine going to the jar ...and not finding you there. But something one day will happen. And either the butterfly will die in the jar ...or I’ll have to let you go. “yes that’s what it comes down too” I think so And so it's like I know I'm looking at a butterfly and I want to remember everything about it because there’s always something somewhere telling me it probably won't be there forever “nothing ever is” ”where there’s a start there’s an end where there’s life there’s death and the cycle starts all over again and that’s just life.” I know I just wanted you to know that I'm glad you were in my jar. I'll still be glad if and when it's ever empty. And that was then I remembered that day And the conversations back then Right when I took the lid off of my pretty jar And watched you fly away I suppose the only thing I never much counted on Was crying when you Took flight "I'm a junkyard full of false starts....Elliot Smith" |

Someone we love can never be placed in a jar, held against their will. If they love us enough, they will never leave. A very insightful poem and yes, I also put butterflies in a jar as a child, only to later let them go. Be well. Michael Proust- |
