Facing The Wind Alone, Six last night’s storm took down branches and leaves but left the white house alone, so I heaved a quiet sigh, and faced the wind alone thank God for little favors I had the bull taken back by the neighbors, he had done his job by the cow, his labors good, the cow will quicken thank God for generous people the children are now in school, fall time’s come to do those things I cannot do when are here to see me cry thank God I cry less now I come to the soddie house where you are closest to me I can sit in the gloam feel safe, I’m home and your blue eyes comfort my memories thank God for little favors I talk to you, bring up news of the neighbors that stay, those that choose to go, as some have lost their way on the vast plains, it’s too much to hold their small dreams thank God my memory stays my dreams didn’t die with you I carry on with the thought that for our freedom you brought me here to this good land Thank God you were right ~*~ you recall, we wrote back east encouraging those traveling west to bring seedlings for trees for furniture and other necessities? the immigrants brought great varieties, we planted, one by one, trees to give windbreaks, act as fences for cattle, so that when the cowboys would drive them, they would not get into our gardens…do you recall? but the cattle drives are over now, Texas fever having caught on, scaring folks faster than wild fires just this year, they put up a new University in Salina, and it’s only 1886… they didn’t think it would happen for another few years but the people are anxious for education thank God for that ~*~ I put our old bed back in here for the hired hands, when they come, they were handy, putting a second bed over, called it bunking, they did they don’t want curtains on this old window, it lets in some sun I miss you. It would be easy, too easy, to return east and stay with papa, as mama is with you now, but I cannot leave this land, no you put too much in it alone, then us together, and the children call it home I’ve asked papa to come here, but I believe he feels with mama the way I am with you I would miss this land as much as I miss you, and I won’t miss you that much, for who would take care of the cornflowers planted above you and welcome you in the mornings as I do now I wouldn’t have you think I had given up, by going east, returning home, no, I would miss facing the wind this is my place now, I need the change of weather to remind me when I am cold and when I am warm I could not take this old soddie with me, where we lived, in our early days no, my love, I shall stay here for who would I talk with otherwise? the children will be home soon, so walk with me in the warm sun, up to our good house, and make my feet skip with your whistling… for I still hear that when I face the wind alone Dear Passion Poets: I did not intend for this theme to become a "series" but it has evolved as such. I know the vignettes become a little long, so your patience is very appreciated. If it becomes too much, please feel free to let me know. Thank you for reading. It is only incumbent on me to answer all that so readily scanned these pennings...if nothing more, than you thank you, each and all, for bearing with the series, and for knowing and believing how I put my heart into what I say, and do. Thank you again! |
