Corporal Cognoscenti was learned beyond his station.
This fact would cause his sargeant
Considerable aggravation.

If the sargeant said,"Right face,"
Cognoscenti would demur:
'Should that order be "Right turn"?
You might check just to be sure.'

"Hit the dirt," the sarge would shout
In authoritative terms.
Cognoscenti would remind him
That the dirt was full of germs.

And so the sargeant's patience
Eventually wore thin.
He choose a time he thought was right
To summon Cognoscenti in.

"Cognoscenti, I've had my fill
Of your refusals to obey.
I'm recommending court martial;
I can see no other way.

I find you insubordinate
Under Section Forty-eight
Of the Military Code,
And I leave you to your fate."

Cognoscenti only smiled
And said,"Sargeant,if I may.
I'm sure insubordination
Is under Forty-seven A."
