A Drunk Driver Stole My Childhood

by Michael

At nine years old I defeated death,
struck down by a drunk driver.
I looked both ways,
then crossed the road.

It was only then
that I saw the lights
and murderous steel
bearing down on me.

Hit in the face,
I was thrown forty feet through the air
to land upon a curb of concrete,
broken and bleeding.

I would never be the same again.
All nine years of my life
were erased,
caused by brain damage.
My memory was gone.

I woke and tried to rise.
I fell back down.
Again I tried to rise,
but the pain was so intense
that I passed out.

To this day I still bear scars
and live in pain.
I sometimes think about
those missing nine years
and wonder what I was like as a boy,
what I experienced.

I remember the doctors
giving up and not expecting
me to live through the night.

My mother held me
through that night
and quietly wept.

(Please don’t drink and drive, EVER!
I was one of the fortunate ones.
There are far too many stories
of those that were not.)

you have my heart here my friend, I know what it feels like to be covered with a vehicle - I suffered the same fate at the hands of road rage - A rather chilling motorcycle accident 2yrs ago - Glad you made it, and will continue to do so.

Michael~
This one touches me deeply, stirring this heart of a sister who lost her younger brother to a drunken driver's negligence.

I'm thankful that you lived ...
for even one to not survive this tragedy,
is far too high a price to be paid.

Thank you for sharing this ...
The saddest part is that heart-aching pieces like this
don't even touch the people who could make a difference.
But .... we try.  We have to try.

Everyone,

Thank you for responding.  For those of you that have experienced loss at the hands of a drunken driver, you have my deepest and most heartfelt sympathy.  Call a cab, a friend, or walk, but please never drink and drive, or allow someone you know to do so.
