~Spirits Rise~

She walks the frozen forest in silent whispers
her nor her gray ghost companion create sound
White birches silhouette against feathery frosted pines
at the shimmering iced river's edge ... safe passage is found
Ancestral voices grant her vision and direction
the past leads her here to worship upon sacred ground
Birthright into royalty ... a princess born of wisdom
by culture, custom, and creed ... she is eternally bound

Ebony cascades flowing in adorned heritage
every bead woven to speak her peoples tale
Braids of honor worn in her pledge to life
with the belief that her breed will prevail
Tradition ebbs in breath of winter breeze
covering her stands in a snowflake veil
Wisps of purity dance in tribal pride
as lyrics ride the wind of sorrows wail

Draped with the raw edge of buckskin
lined in softness from the doe's breast
Sculpted close to her sun bronzed body
with laced pattern embracing her chest
Blazed within a trail of carved turquoise
bestowed upon her in a nation's unrest
Proudly she wears a medallion of spirits
blessed from the tears of Heaven's crest

Onyx pearls beckon from behind lashes of sable
eyes search the snow crystaled horizon for a sign
The ancients and kindred set her spirit in motion
this ceremony of legacy and legend will define
A ritual of inheritance handed down by elders wise
infinity unfurls as emerald moon and jade stars align
An apparition rising into night's indigo liquid satin
thru rite of passage she is born into destiny's design

~Epilogue~

She has witnessed the passing of her people
eyes of realize have bled rivers along the trail of tears
The loss of humanity, heritage and honor etched eternal
shame and sorrow our burden engraved in unforgiving years
A history of ignorance written by bloodstained hands of man
raped, pillaged, and murdered then called themselves pioneers
In the absence of conscious  ... in the absence of humane
we reduced a proud race to tourist attractions and souvenirs

~The Spirit Trail~
Dan Fogelberg

Let every creature I see
Be a brother and friend to me
Let every step that I take
leave the footprints of a warrior ... along the spirit trail

Ive seen them come
Ive seen them go
they took the land
they took control
They robbed my father of his very soul

I was born a native son
and I'll never be another one
Someday I will give it all away
to walk the spirit trail.

~Ever On~
A Traveling Prayer
by: Dan Fogelberg

May the trail rise up to meet you
May your heart rejoice in song
May the skies be fair above you
as you journey ever on.

Ever on ... ever on

And in this planetary circle
we are but a single stone
spinning on our fragile axis
Through the endless night alone

Ever on ... ever on

May your love be there to guide us
May it always keep us strong
May we walk within your footsteps
as you lead us ever on.

Ever on ... ever on.

"Teach your children what we have taught our children ...
The Earth is our mother...
What ever befalls the earth ...befalls the sons of the earth.
This we know.
The Earth does not belong to man ... man belongs to the Earth"

Inspired by my personal admiration
for these special people, my collection of Maija prints,
and by my fellow poets here who write of their own
passion and respect for the Native Amercian people...
who were here first and who we owe so much
for the lessons learned from them ... and the wrongs done to them.
Margie you have inspired many of us with your tributes to your heritage.

A very special thank you to Mark for writing with me again,
thank you for the lessons in writing with imagery.
I know you share the same passion, respect and awe
for these gentle people.
Your poetry and presence here are surely missed.
Dont ever doubt it cowboy.

Absolutely incredible, you two......I loved this verse

"Ebony cascades flowing in adorned heritage
every bead woven to speak her peoples tale
Braids of honor worn in her pledge to life
with the belief that her breed will prevail
Tradition ebbs in breath of winter breeze
covering her stands in a snowflake veil
Wisps of purity dance in tribal pride
as lyrics ride the wind of sorrows wail" and the last one was utterly phenomenal....you have blown me away.  I have some Native American ancestry and this hit me hard...so many people killed, their lives controlled by the government, their freedom sacrificed as invaders overpowered them.  Outstanding poetry, Mark and JM.  And I loved the addition of the Maija prints, we have a bunch at my house and I love them.   Peace and much love to you both.

JM, what a way to celebrate 8000! Mark, you are a great helper! As I have said before, 2 grandkids have Indian blood and their father will not take the time to find out their special and rightful place.  I can hear, feel, smell, taste the very air around this "painting".  I have been ashamed many times for what the whites have done to the Indian people.  Maybe with your words, it can make us heal some what.  You both have given us a wonderful gift.  Thank you,  ME

Even rules formulated with the very best of intentions must sometimes be broken. *S* And the simple fact of the matter is... I know I'll be visiting this poem again and again. *S* So I'm not even going to feel guilty about making an exception to my read from the back policy... especially not since I've been itching to reply ever since I first read this beauty in the wee hours of the morning and the werk monster is waiting to drag me away for who knows how long! *G*

You chose the perfect title... spirits rise as your beautiful words are read... and then tears fall through the epilogue. The last two lines are penned from such caring hearts... and should be engraved on every heart... for to remember shame at injustice is to refuse repetition.

Perfect rhyme, flawless rhythm, incredible heart and beautiful graphics... the two of you have created a masterpiece! *S* To echo some of the other replies... however much praise I might have for this poem, I can't find words to do it justice!

Now, Janet Marie... if it takes major number milestones for you to get that cowboy poet posting, wouldja please just post your lil heart out? Don't eat, don't drink, and for heavens sake, don't leave the computer! LOL. For he is so much missed! *G*

And cowboy... I know work is keeping you away... but this beauty is just a reminder of how much poorer we are without your regular input. I sure hope you find a way to rope and hogtie that werk monster soon... for as much as we appreciate JM being your reader and typist, WE NEED YOU BACK! *G*

Reading this I can almost feel my grandmother's tears.. thank you for sharing this lovely poem and congratulations on your 8000 post.

Listen children to a story
that was written long ago
bout a kingdom on a mountain
and the valley folk below
On the mountain was a treasure
buried deep beneath a stone
and the valley people swore
they'd have it for their very own.

Go ahead and hate your neighbour
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of heaven.
Justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
come the judgement day,
on the bloody morning after
one tin soldier rides away........

So the people of the valley
sent a message up the hill
asking for the buried treasure
tons of gold for which they'd kill.
Came an answer from the kingdom
"With our brothers we will share,
all the secrets of our mountain
all the riches buried there."

Now the valley cried with anger,
"Mount your horses draw your sword!"
and they killed the mountain people
so they won their just reward.
Now they stood beside the treasure
on the mountain dark and red
turned the stone and looked beneath it,
"PEACE ON EARTH" was all it said!.......

Go ahead and hate your neighbour.
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of heaven.
Justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
come the judgement day,
on the bloody morning after
one tinsoldier rides away....................

I am very impressed with the whole of this. The words are so meaningful and truly get inside and the display and sounds accompanying, take the poem and paint it all over me. Wonderful. *Peace poets.

No, I did not miss this one...how could I?  Life has been extremely hectic this past week or so.  But, I will tell you guys now that the imagery in this takes my breath away...but, that's not surprising...'cuz, well, the Teach and JM wrote this one!  What else could you expect??  But, seriously, this is stunningly gorgeous...and, it's great to hear from the Teach, too...make sure you tell him that he is missed, and he needs to write something so you can post it for him again...since he can't seem to *ahem* get to a computer HIMSELF...hehe...
OH, yeah...make sure he knows that the METS are so gonna kick cardinal butt this year...but, I don't think I have to tell him that...hehe... ...but, do make sure he knows he needs to get his booty back in here soon!

SP ... on phone with cowboy...
he says to ask you ...

Is the 10 to ZIP score (with Montreal having the 10 ...METS being ZERO)this weekend...
is this the way the Mets plan on kicking anyones butt this year???
If you look hard enough you might find a highschool team or two that the Mets might be able to score against ... however you probably wont find one that they can actually beat.
I comend you on the fact that your a loyal fan because only a true fan would support a worthless collection of misfits so passionately.
Thank you so much for the reply on the poem,
so glad you enjoyed it..
and I will see what I can do about having JM post one for me soon.
Teach says dont forget the rhyme and imagery.
Practice writing about Cardinals.!!!

thank you much for the replies and congrats.

ok since I have been out so much that I missed this...I guess being #45 is better than not seeing it at all...sigh...excellent writing.......I only wish I could write with such imagery...*shakes her head*  to take the reader and not let go until long after the last word is read is a talent I aspire to achieve.....really incredible work, and presentation........jm...I love those pics...sensual and soft at the same time...thank you for posting and sharing

OK...I truly was not going to acknowledge that, um, let's just be safe and go with NONSENSE talk from the cowboy, who's obviously disillusional.  I think it's too much time on the road...eh??  Yep, that's it...all them thar fumes gettin' to his head...make sure you tell him that, JM, will ya?  Thanks a mil...and to think, all I said was that the METS are going to kick some cardinal butt this year, and he came up with ALL that...hmm...is SOMEONE a little insecure?  HMMM...somethin' to ponder.     OK...I'll stop now...after all, this is supposed to be about the beautiful poem you guys have written, isn't it?  Yeah...well, at least you've got that goin' fer ya, m'friend...cuz your taste in baseball teams leaves quite a lot to be desired...
p.s.
thanks, JM, for puttin' up with all this blah blah blah!!

to be with you...
I've tried to hide my passion,
but it's just no use...
piece by piece I lose it
when you walk into the room...

This is without a doubt, a masterpiece. I am stunned at the beauty of the words and imagery. It's worth reading many times over, and each time I read this I am sure it will bring new understanding and appreciation.
I miss not being online as much as I would like to be, but I hope to see more and more writing from you two.
Whatever you do, don't stop writing!
Beautiful, just beautiful.

Janet (and Mark)

I just came in for a second read, and it's even more captivating and awesome as it was the first time! I'm really very proud of you both

But, if I may add my comments on the baseball race, THE TORONTO BLUE JAYS WILL KICK CARDINAL AND MET BUTT THIS YEAR NO QUESTION! hehehe

In the absence of conscious  ... in the absence of humane
we reduced a proud race to tourist attractions and souvenirs

powerful words it is refreshing to see poets acknowledge a proud race who were almost wiped out for the sake of white man's progress,  and the fact that the poem was written by two of passion's finest makes it even more powerful. beautifully written guys.

where black will never meet white
so read my token lips
like they never exist"

I'm in awe - the haunting music added to the beautiful collection of artwork. Your tribute to the Native American People, I know they would be honored. I will keep this...

Good grief, I almost forgot this one!  Besides now I printed it out This was more than a collaboration, it was a melding of souls in words.  Still awe-struck 2nd time around Jan, and Mark.
