The Girl with Terra Cotta Eyes The girl with terra cotta eyes knew the sidewalks of the town, she liked to walk them daily in her skirt of just plain brown. She would dance across the meadow as the town folk watched with guile, her peasant blouse allowing a glimpse of gentle wile. She sweetened and she sweatered all the children of the glade, with her they knew the flavor of a summer lemonade. She knew just how to listen and draw out every truth, never telling what was laying underneath their simple youth. I saw her one day sitting with the sunset on her grace, as the night was slowly fading, on her cheeks it left its trace. As I watched with fascination, she reach and touch the place where carved upon a tombstone was a darling baby’s face. She was singing, oh so softly, like a caress it felt to me, and although the words were softened, the sound was tenderly. I never knew what secret lay hidden in her sigh, that night I saw tears falling from her terra cotta eyes. [This message has been edited by Martie (edited 03-31-2001).] |

I saw her one day sitting with the sunset on her grace, as the night was slowly fading, on her cheeks it left its trace. I may not often say it but I love the way you write... ~Wynter "The worst prison would be a closed heart". |

Oh, I love this one!!! It reminds me of some wonderful souls I know... who brighten the lives of others so readily but shed their tears alone. This is beautiful sadness so very well written! |

How - I mean HOW - do you do it? I swear - If you don't publish AND put this Foremost in the book (I can visualize the title now: The Girl with Terra Cotta Eyes and other poems - By Martie Odell Ingebretsen) I don't know what I am going to do with you - Another vision I have: You as the first female Poet Laureate of United States (I'm serious!) |
