Strawberry Smiles Virginia Salter blue jeans turtle-neck pull-over tenny runners on her feet short, disheveled, blond curls brushed back with pudgy, dusty, soiled fingers cheek smudge of strawberry brown stained lips smile with eye-twinkle sparkling in the sun poised after a berry patch day fat hand holding that strawberry hallick partly filled with fruit seeds stuck in teeth her strawberry heart grins her lips such joy fills my heart that this sweet piece of my soul cherishes God’s heart-shaped treasures just as I it could so be me when at the same age I wandered in from Uncle Richard’s garden earned my nickname, “Neater” for I announced when asked where I’d been (as if no tell-tale signs were seen) “I was in the garden an’ I eat’n’eat’n’eat’n’eat.” strawberries my truly favorite fruit surely passed through umbilical and grew ravenously in the heart and taste buds of my sweet, sweet child in so many ways our hearts are joined bonded forever in love ©March 29, 2000 |

The heart seems to be beating fine on my computer, Virginia...and this poem made me think of summer! Very picturesque. |

Yep, it's beating on mine, now, too! Glad you enjoyed. It was inspired by one of my favorite photos of my daughter when she was about 3 years old and memories of my own childhood in my uncle's strawberry patch. |
