Dedicated to Marge Tindal My heart is crying silent, bitter tears, For loss of sounds my ear no longer hears. The laughter of sweet children at their play. The murmuring of women, as they flay Soft skin from off the deer the hunters bring, To help the tribe survive until the spring. The sound of them preparing food they grew. The melons, corn and beans to see them through. The sound of ponies cropping summer grass And greetings of the warriors as they pass. The drumming of swift hooves upon the ground. Excitement when the People gather round To hear the storytellers weave their spell, At telling tales they knew so very well. The village settling in when time to sleep. The sound of peaceful silence, dark and deep. I listen for the beat of drums at night And rattles that began religious rite. The crackle of the fire and the sight Of People dancing there within it's light. How sad they've lost this life of yesterday. Torn by the roots and forced to go away. The People, brutalized by men called white, Whose souls were black as any starless night, Were scattered far, but those who did survive, Still keep the dreams of Cherokee alive And ancient spirits to this day embrace, The remnants of this handsome, noble race! The first one in, the last one out my words but a whisper, your deafness a shout Wakpanica, wasicuna, hemiyeyado, Amen words got us here and here they lie from cherokee to northern skies Iyanke Sioux were last to die killed my Buddha, killed my Christ Killed my karma, paid the price For 27 years I've carried the welt Wie kleine ist deinige Welt? BettyLou~ By reaching into the history of my people, you have found yourself encircled by gentle spirits. This is beautifully written ... and touches this lady with tender recall of times spoken of by my great grandmother. Thank you, spirited sister, for this touch of awareness. I can assure you that it will be only the first offering through your quest. *Hugs* ~*Willow White Feather*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ |

Absolutely beautiful! It makes me think that Robert Frost might have written a poem on the same subject in much the same style. You really did well here!!! |
