Bits of Self Image

Today I shared my soul with others,
like me in many ways,
yet so very different.
Tears of one drew me to her.
Surrounding her in arms,
I whispered, "I have no children,
but would adopt your heart if I could."

Strong, with controlled emotions,
I fooled them all.
"Fake it 'til you make it", I heard one say
and so, I fed them needed hope,
supplied their thoughts with calm,
as an assertive tear fell,
smearing the words on white, those saying
"Real life does not come with background music."

Old tapes kept playing in my mind,
while trying to assess my positives.
A velvet steamroller...
that is how to be tactful,
to assert oneself. And when asked
what am I most complimented on,
I answered...My Smile.

thank you Balladeer...I spent a day (the first of 4 weeks worth) in classes...to build self esteem, to enable one to support themselves after being abandoned, widowed or whatever other circumstances befall women of today. Many were younger...some my age, all of us "sisters", yet each situation different. Anyway, these were some thoughts of my full day among others "in hurt". Thank you for the smile comment...it is appreciated as are all your responses.
