The Significant Date

If truth be told, I laid awake
For most the night it seems,
No sandman came to visit me
To whisk me off in dreams.

I've felt it build the last few nights,
Sub-conscience must have known,
The thoughts I block from active mind;
This date engraved in stone.

I look upon the calendar
And see an empty space,
A date that holds the sorrows
Time can simply not erase.

To some, it's just another day,
No real significance,
They'll go about their same routine
As always, in a trance.

I ponder how this date will
Simply carry on it's way,
While every year my life will halt
Upon this very day.

I'll try to smile and forge ahead,
Pretend that I'm alright,
And hide the tears I save by day
To let them fall at night.

No one can truly understand
The depths of feelings wrought,
Within the heart of sorrow's song,
Lest in these shoes, they've walked.

Kit~
A very warm and touching render.
Dates that cause us to pause and recall
are special moments in our lives meant for remembering.

Whether the occasion be a sad one -
or a happy one ... we all find significance in them.

They do belong uniquely to our memory banks
and often others would not or could not know
what we are feeling.
But that we feel ... gives the memory a reason to remind us ...
it is significant to our remembering.

I wrap a hug around you and lift you in prayer~
Love~

My own significant date is still a time away, yet I have already begun the nights of restless anticipation.  Well done!

You have put into words the very reason why I still keep my parents' birthdates and anniversary date on the calendar...to pause to remember....

Thank you Kit, for once again speaking my heart...

Oh, my. I have a couple of these dates in my mind too. After all these years am I the only ones who remember? Yes. But you've made me feel that somehow we all have those dates we share. I'll remember it with you next year. Take care Kit.

365 dates a year. Some of joy some of sadness. I have mine, you have yours. Thanks for the poem.

I owe you an apology... for my big feet probably stretched your moccasins hopelessly out of shape as I read this beautiful poem. *S* We remember all the time... but the remembering is so intense when anniversaries or holidays come to visit... You've written that ache with poetic perfection.

Wow...
My own date (one of 2) happened just over a week ago.
Youve wrote the anticipation, hurt, anger and the wonderment of it (as someone else put) eloquently. I had the same feeling, why cant anyone else remember?
to some its just a date, for others a memory etched in stone..

Time flies? Say it not so, time stays we go.

felt every word of this one kit-girlie...
we mark the time upon our hearts...
each passing day is part of the healing...
but the anniversary is a way of showing respect....
we can heal and even move on...but never forget...

reminds me of "The End of the Word" by Skeeter Davis.

"Don't they know it's the end of the world...."

Everyone has those 'end of the world' dates that are recognized by no one but them..

What a fantastic thought to put to poetic form....you are awesome!

Now...if you're ever available for a significant date.......
