Generations We’re the sixties generation We are sons of Viet Nam Daughters of a revolution Students of the killing bomb All we wanted were some changes All we asked for was some peace Minds to open, hearts to care And unrelenting war to cease Dreams were made of daisy flowers Idealistic notions reigned Priciples were learned from parents Whose Depression was engrained Little did we know of hardship Never had we lived in hell Social justice was our call Til one by one our heroes fell Something must have moved a concience Someone must have said it right Changes came, but ever slowly In our generation’s fight How do we explain our times To sons and daughters of today Who can’t see an iron curtain Shutting out the light of day Minds live on computer chips And satellites blaze through the sky Nothing lies behind the fear Or in a paper tiger’s eye As for us, we still recall Four little girls who lost their lives We see strange names etched on a wall And hug the one who still survives Now the world is all connected To the links of cyberspace Our sons will never understand The why and how of what took place So much knowledge stands before them Peace is something one expects I cannot explain things to The ones called Generation X Elizabeth Santos [This message has been edited by Elizabeth Santos (edited 05-10-2001).] |

"Priciples were learned from parents Whose Depression was engrained" "Our sons will never understand The why and how of what took place" "So much knowledge stands before them Peace is something one expects I cannot explain things to The ones called Generation X" Excellent writing Liz! My goodness, you have so many incredible lines in this thought-provoking piece. One only seems to appreciate that which they survived through their own experience and generations' conscience. You've expressed these sentiments beautifully in this powerful piece my friend ... a wonderful read indeed! Best wishes, /Kit |

Perhaps we can take solace in the fact that the "Sixties Generation"... or the "hippies"... whatever the dub may be... is the most significant decade of the last century. We hear nothing of the earlier decades standing and redefining society... We don't hear of the "Seventies Generation" or the "Eighties Generation".. or the "Nineties".... We do stand as a monument to the world, don't we?.... Nice job, my friend... (Hope you had a wonderful time on your trip)... |

The children of today may never understand... but I kept seeing headlines... So many feelings were resurrected by your poem and that's good... for though we can't explain, we should never forget. *S* Great poem, Elizabeth! |

But Lady Santos...because of you, a spark may fire, and they may read this, and more, and come to the realization that while they might not understand what it is we've done... at least they will know, we tried.... Excellent! |
