I wanted to post this for my 7000 milestone, but I couldn't wait...and won't have much time on line, due to Mother's Day and flowers and a weeks vacation to see my son graduate from college...so I'm posting it now.  Hugs to you all!

For Him, Because

My father was a writer
before I was born.
I can picture his dark head
leaning over paper,
his long tapered fingers
holding the pen.

I’m sure he sat at the kitchen table
of yellow Formica,
while my mother hummed at the kitchen stove,
the smell of meatloaf around him.

He wrote of a war that he never saw
except in his imagination,
story after story of brave men,
men who were like him.

His hazel eyes dreamed to life
a reality that was published
in magazines called War Stories,
but his personal war was inside.

I know now that he wandered away
from his family of English Professors,
took the road around the school
where diplomas are carried,
yet, he was one of the smartest
men I’ve known.

He fell up and down
a bipolar ladder before there was a word
for it except crazy and black sheep.

What I remember is asking
for words to say what was needed
in my growing up paper essay.
He had them,
and gave them to me
mixed with his love.

Thank you Vincent Clark
for my muse,
and for throwing me in the air
and catching me with your love of words.

Martie, I wish to thank your Father for bringing into the world one of the purest souls I have had the pleasure of meeting, whose writing ability is only surpassed by her loving heart and generous spirit.  I wish to thank you for using a word in your poem that is too often hidden or unspoken and that is "bi-polar", for maybe some will see what it is and help loved ones to recognize they even have it. Hugs, on a wonderful tribute to your Dad, and I am sure he has a word to describe his feelings for you right now, "pride"!

As I read this - nearly all the lines - sound like ones I write = partly because I "have to" (serious addiction), partly because I want to document 'who I am... was' for those who will 'follow' me -  But to suggest that that could sum up This - or any other "Martie" poem would be a serious underjudgement - witness "took the road around" and shining even brighter: The last line, clearly indicative of that = I'm in total awe of your talent

Martie,

What a wonderful, wonderful poem this is, just fantastic.  Loaded with emotion, of happiness and pain, it has it all.

And, a wonderful tribute to your father.

Especially liked these lines:

He fell up and down
a bipolar ladder before there was a word
for it except crazy and black sheep
