the sun took a little longer to rise today
and the herons came not to the pond this morning

these are the stories that she used to tell
she made us stop and take a look at the things that mattered
a sun rise
a dragonfly
a heron
and when we looked at these things through her eyes
our own eyes became all the more clearer
our own hearts became all the more open
our own lives became all the more full

she never let life get in the way of her living it
she made it her own, and lived it her own way
never compromising,
never changing,
never giving up
and in this,
she inspired us all

she lived as one with nature
her very home made of
the stones of the earth,
the glass of the sky
the wood of the land
and it was here
that her art and her life became one
she lived her art
and her art became her life

and so now
the sun is a little less brighter
the wind blows a little colder
the herons sing not their song
the dragonflies hover not today

for today ,
nature has lost . . . a friend. . .

Gwen Frostic died yesterday morning. . . I don't know if you've heard of her. . . but she was one of Michigan's premier artists and poets. . . she was a self-made millionaire, winner of numerous awards, spokesperson for the disabled (she suffered from a condition that left her with slurred speech and a limp), and a fantastic artist and poet. . . I've been to her studio in the Traverse City, Michigan area a number of times. . . it was wonderful. . she would have been 95 today. . . truly an amazing woman. . .

For more about her, go here. . . www.frostic.com/gwen

Thanks. . .

What a nice tribute Sven, and yes I have heard of her, being a native michigander.  But i didn't know she had a studio in Traverse City, I even worked up that way for a couple years. But she will be missed and thank you for letting us know.  She will be missed by many.

Just had to edit with this note: The freepress had a great write up about her..

I've been to her studio a lot as well.  I never met her, but I've heard that she was very mischevious, like to play jokes and what not.

You've captured her here well, and I can only be sad that she is gone, but happy that we will always have a part of her here with us.

Sven - she sounds like she was an amazing woman, and sadness is in hearts. But Sven my friend, you are also amazing, with the words that you write.

I never knew of her when I lived in Michigan, but it's always sad to lose someone who's talent has inspired so many.

Brad, thank you. . .

Bernie, yes, she did have a studio made of stones, glass and wood in the Traverse City area. . . it was a big attraction. . . thanks. . .

Lady in White, thank you. . . I know that she will be missed by many. . .

PV, yes, she was quite the prankster. . . one of which was a wedding gift to her sister of a box full of canned goods, with the labels removed!!   Thank you. . .

Temptress, thank you. . .

BC, she was. . . she started a company in the Detroit area in the 50's and slowly but surely made into a million-dollar business, unheard of for a woman in that era. . . she never married, but did so much. . . thank you. . .

Joyce, indeed He did. . . and for that, we will always be grateful. . . thank you. . .

deVine, I'm not really sure how many people have heard of her. . . I think that hers was one of the names that was suggested for Poet Laureate of Michigan a few years ago. . . but perhaps more will know of her life and work now. . .

James, thank you for reading my friend. . .
